Speedy -

Molycorp have the ambition, yes, but not the wherewithal, to be mine-to-magnet. In fact, cast your eyes back over sector news, and you'll see they've already made an approach (unsuccessfully!) for Great Western...purely for GWT and LCM.

This is the US's big problem. Not only did they let their rare earth deposits fall by the wayside, they also abandoned virtually all the downstream technology. The majority of which is now located in China. Of the up and coming new miners, only Great Western have the capability to produce the metals, alloys and powders that are needed by end users. Lynas will be refining and separating in Malaysia - but will be selling to intermediate companies who will turn their products into the materials needed by end users.

Pr0t0n -

Note, rare metals, not rare earths.

TT - fair point - #687 should have had a Wealth Warning attached ... agree with your #688.
I mentioned them mainly because of the "unkown" geology.

Re yr #689 - Molycorp ambition is for mine to magnets ... but their mine (reopen 2012?) has low % of the
REE's used in magnets? Maybe they hope to get product from Ucore (2015?) or elsewhere, the only other likely
source is GWM (early 2013?).

QUESTIONS I ASK ANYONE

These are the questions I ask anyone who suggests a Rare Earth play to me and here they are;

(1)Which of the Rare Earths are mostly likely to be in short supply in thenext several years and does that play have a substantial number of kgsper ton of those particular rare earths.

(2) Is that Rare Earth Company likely to fill the needs of those short supply rare earths within 2 to 3 years.

(3) Most importantly what is the grade of the deposit and percentage distribution of light and heavy rare earths.

(4) How soon will they be in production. (Mining of the ore is only 15% of the total value of Rare Earths)

(5)What will the capital expenditure be to get the mining into operationand in addition will they be capable of separation and extraction ofthe various Rare Earth and in addition will they be capable ofproducing the oxides in end-user specifications and in metal form.(The separation, extraction and producing oxides & metals toend-user specification is an additional 45% of the total value of RareEarths

(6) Will they be capable to produce and process alloysfor the magnet and battery manufacturers. (This process adds another40% to the total value of Rare Earths.

In summary Mining contributes 15% to the coffers of a company
......................Separation and extraction adds another 45% to the coffers
......................Alloy production for the magnet and battery industry adds another 40% to the coffers

Youcan have the worlds largest deposit but if the grade and distributionis in a percentage that the economics is in question then I tend tohave a second look and put it to the bottom of the list.

Speedy, I exactly would not be dumping my GWG at 12.8 kgs of HREEs + Y for the 1.24 kgs of HREEs + Y in your link.

NVTA could become a rare earth producer. from the 15th december 2010 report;

-- an expanded and enhanced dry plant will be expanded and enhanced allowing production of a cleaner product and therefore facilitating ease of global transport. This also has the added benefit of a rare earth concentrate by-product

Comments on Seeking Alpha article - all IMHO
1. I believe China has environmental concerns, and the bursting of a dam in Czechoslovakia a year ago
with some flooding into the Danube concentrated their minds. They are already concerned about toxic
groundwater seepage toward the Yellow River - and they have enough problems with water already.
Also, MCP had similar problems causing a suspension of operations there.
2. China has mined perhaps half of its REE resources. They have to be thinking about an exit strategy.

China "flexing its muscles" ? - I do not think so.

It all points toward higher prices for REE's in the short, medium and long run.

Hi Speedy...Who knows? You may be right. But if so, it's a pretty good lie as PAW has brought me a profit of 139.26% in a few months.

Let's hope the lie isn't unmasked just yet!

mikkydhu - Mine == hole in ground + resident liar

TT - thanks for detailed update on China (mines and quotas)
Also I seem to recall that China has 1000++ engineers working on REE applications. More
breakthroughs probably give greater demand.

GWM climbing towards nosebleed territory ($0.68 atm), MCP levelling off a little.

Happy new Year all.

mikkydhu, Most of my comments and analysis of any REE venture is made on those who have a 43-101 or a JORG on current record or have been a past producing mine such as Molycorp, KutessayII or Steenkampskraal. It is very difficult from visiting their website in developing any kind of consensus without having definitive information to place any kind of valuation. I personally invest in ventures where that kind of information is available.

I have skimmed through the last 450 or so posts on this board and not found a mention of TSXV.PAW, Pacific Wildcat Resources.

Its relevance here is that it is nearing completion of DD for its acquisition of Mrima Hill, 80 kms south of Mombasa in Kenya, which has a niobium deposit and a rare earth metals deposit.

PAW announced this move on 23rd July 2010. Please see details in the announcement on their website, www.pacificwildcat.com.

They say there: "Historic information shows a large REO deposit is located coincidently and in close proximity to the niobium deposit at Mrima Hill. Binge(1955) reports a total of 35 million tonnes of mineralisation at 3.1% REO in the surface weathered profile." Unfortunately none of the assay data is available.

PAW is an interesting company. It is due to open a small tantalum mine in Mozambique, not far from NVTA, in February. There may also be economic lithium there. They are staffed by a strong team of former managers of Sons of Gwalia, later called Talison Minerals, who ran a big tantalum mine in Australia, currently closed as the management couldn't agree terms with tantalum processors.

PAW's share price has risen strongly recently in anticipation of concluding its acquisition of Mrima Hill.

I would be interested in any views of this company and in particular of its Mrima Hill REO deposit.

REM is a punters stock at the moment. Nothing more, nothing less. It's just a cash shell with a hot sector name at the present time.
