he's trying to draw attention to the new book he's written which - just coincidentally of course- is about the failed search for utopia (The Sky was Ours).

I think it is a terrible article. Just some sensationalist mish-mash of ideologies.

And he misses the point that the progress which has so far been made in scaling-up lab-grown meat is truly astonishing.

My word, what happened to the editorial team, that was a long read. On the whole though, it is the tone rather than the content that builds the suspense. In ANIC portfolio for example all meat companies (Mosa, Meatable eve Blue Nalu) recognise that price parity and market share is a decade or so off. Anthony Chow and Jim Mellon are consistent on this especially over the last 12 months. The response to lab meat seems to be either a surprise that it is not in circulation or suspicion that it is going to put all farmers out of work. But, there have been only two companies hit the dinner plate in the US. Singapore, there are more but it really is like we are witnessing the invention of the motor car or quill. It is very new. Very, very new.All ANIC companies in meat (and probably in general) need to work on reduction of media (the liquid in which the meat grows). ANIC companies like Meatly have reduced cost from £700 to around £1. But still need to reduce by around 90%. It is going to happen, but not at the pace of the author of the article you kindly shares would seem to expect. And let us remember, cellular agriculture is not just meat. It is a quarter of ANIC portfolio. Added to that when it comes to meat, it sea food kind that is probably most exciting in ANIC portfolio; Blue Nalu have MOUs with major players in Thailand, Japan and South Korea and PIF on board. Now that is really exciting.I think it is a very useful article but overly reactionary on a sector that is still finding its feet.

Anyone read this piece from the New York Times? It’s long but a worthwhile read. It’s also VERY grim. Any thoughts?

Yeah I dont think there is a vetting process - I think signing up will get you in as a spectator. I put down the organisation I work for but I suspect that I could have just as easily put NA.

Was directed to this (4-week old) article earlier today.

Big tobacco, big oil, big meat - it only happens because vested interests feel threatened and there’s so much money at stake.

Another milestone. California Cultured (CC) agrees a 10 year deal with Japan's biggest chocolate producer. CC is a cellular agriculture producer of cocoa powder (ANIC investee). This is the first decade long agreement for any cellular agriculture company of any kind.https://vegconomist.com/products-launches/california-cultured-signs-agreement-japans-meiji-cell-cultured-cocoa/

It's not the whole industry, just lab meat. And this was going to be inevitable, especially from the right of the political spectrum. Taking a stand against new tech as a play against the working man is always an easy vote winner for the hard right and left. But lab meat would not be on the political agenda unless it was actually making real progress, which it is. So, swings and roundabouts! Also, even though the reaction appears to be strong, the same politicians are also strangling farming subsidies, because they also want to bring new money in (esg targets).I'd expect a raft of conspiracy theories over the next few years but the more they appear the more it means progress is being made in lab meat.

This whole industry is getting a lot of negative press at the moment. It almost feels like a conspiracy to drive it down.

What makes this even more wild is that France is at the heart of this and the Agricultural minister talks about farming as an industry that needs to be protected against cellular agriculture.

Lots of ‘farmer protests’ in Europe of late.

Not directly comparable to what ANIC are facilitating but food is just asking to be disrupted.

Japan puts a timeframe on legislation for approving widespread sale of lab grown meat. Approved by 2026. Considering a tranche ANIC investees will be turning on the machines in their factories across 2025, this seems to be a well thought out timeframehttps://vegconomist.com/interviews/japan-association-for-cellular-agriculture-working-achieve-sale-cultivated-meat-japan-2026/

I'm a believer like you, and this is hugely positive news. It really is like we are witnessing something to akin tk the invention of the metal fountain pen (supplanting the quill). But, when Liberation Labs opens, it is straight to market, pass Go and collect two hundred pounds etc. If Believer turned on their vats today, regulatory approval would be required.Added to that, you have to march through a tidal wave of idiocy (see Florida, France, Italy). The latter point is non prohibitive, just arduous. Lab meat is a when not if but precision fermentation is right now. The good news for you and I is that we are early to the party. Let's enjoy that NAV discount whilst everyone slowly catches up.

Believer.

"The company is well-positioned to launch and scale production in the coming year, as it is currently building the largest cultivated meat production facility in the world in Wilson, N.C., which is expected to be operational in2024."

and

"When fully operational, this 200,000-square-foot facility is expected to produce at least 10,000 metric tonnes of cell-cultured meat annually."

That's a big facility of 200,000sq ft. And those are big figures of 10,000 metric tons of cell-cultured meat annually.

This is why Precision Fermentation is not the only game in town.

Surely, the eventual big players will wish to own and run their own cultured meat/precision fermentation manufacturing units like Believer- not just outsource to a third party.

ALL IMO. DYOR.
