Aer Lingus shares tumble by 22pc today

Aer Lingus shares have tumbled by 22pc this morning, following the rejection by the government of Ryanair's 1.40 euro per share bid for the carrier.

Transport minister Noel Dempsey announced the rejection yesterday, saying the price was too law and a takeover would damage competition.

Following the announcement, Ryanair confirmed that it was not continuing with the bid.

The low cost carrier's chief executive Michael O'Leary predicted that Aer Lingus shares would now fall.

And they duly did. They were down 30c this morning to 105

Billionaire Denis O'Brien is set to cast his 2.5 per cent holding in Aer Lingus against the Ryanair bid. The Digicel owner has told an NCB Wealth Management meeting that he would resist any effort by Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary to take over the airline. Mr O'Brien is reported to have been adamant that he did not want to see the two airlines under one owner, not only because of the dangers of a monopoly but also because he was not a fan of the Ryanair style of operation. - Irish Independent

Or is that code for its for sale at the right price as I have lost a fortune in Independent Newspapers!

Airlines: Demand still falling faster than supply

Air France KLM released its passenger data for the month of November this morning. Total passengers carried fell 5.2% yoy to 5.5m, however, traffic on a revenue passenger kilometre (RPK) basis fell by 0.8%. Capacity measured in available seat kilometres (ASK's) fell by 0.7%, which meant load factors were flat at 78.3%. On its short haul network, passenger volumes fell 7.7% to 3.7m, as capacity fell 4.2%. RPK's fell 5.8%, which saw load factors fall 1.1 percentage points to 65.8%. Separately, Air Berlin announced its November traffic data with passenger volumes down 5.8% yoy to 1.94m. Capacity for the same period was reduced by 3.6%, while load factors improved slightly to 72.6% from 72% last year. The declining passenger volumes highlight that the continuing consumer weakness is heavily impacting the European aviation industry. While capacity reductions continue, demand is falling at a faster rate indicating further cuts are required.
