The Dublin Airport Authority has said the recent disruption to air traffic caused by volcanic ash cost the company up to €8m.

Around 3,200 flights at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports were cancelled, affecting 400,000 passengers.

DAA chief executive Declan Collier said the company was still counting the cost as the effect of delays and cancellations was still working its way through the system.

Passenger numbers at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports dropped by 13% to just over 26 million, leading to a13% fall in turnover to €547m. Numbers at Dublin Airport were down 13% to 20.5 million, while Cork recorded a 15% fall to 2.4 million. In both cases, these were the first annual falls since 1991. Passenger numbers at Shannon were down 12% to 2.8 million.

We sail perilously close to disaster

Ireland's true difficulties are masked by another technicality. In most countries there is only a minor distinction between Gross Domestic product and Gross National Product (GNP), but in Ireland the gap is as much as 25 per cent because of the strength of our multi-national sector.

The GNP figure is a much more realistic representation of the Irish economy and our deficit, expressed as a percentage of GNP, as it heads into truly terrifying territory. Despite three budgets in 14 months, wage cuts, spending cuts and tax increases, Ireland's position remains perilous. There will have to be further cuts in government spending in each of the next four years and there will be increasing pressure for tax increases and for new taxes.

Central Statistics Office figures show another big drop in the number of people visiting Ireland in February. This comes after a record drop in January, which was blamed on the extreme weather conditions at the start of the year.

IRISH airlines and hotels, already reeling from the recession and unprecedented floods and snow earlier this year, are set to lose millions of euro as a result of a volcanic eruption in Iceland .

Around €120m was knocked off the value of Ryanair and Aer Lingus as investors fear the delays--and further possible delays today --will hit profits.

Disgraced Anglo Irish chief David Drumm is living on millionaire's row in the upmarket resort of Cape Cod -- safely out of the reach of gardai.

Detectives have already arrested his ex-Anglo cronies Seanie FitzPatrick and Willie McAteer.

At the same time it emerged that Seanie FitzPatrick has now left Ireland, for his own luxury pad in Spain.

There were reports that Seanie travelled courtesy of free flights with Aer Lingus -- as a former airline board member he gets free flights.

Why bid when they can wait and buy what they want for a lot less off the receiver and face no EU competition problems or finding any further nasty surprises hidden under some dirty stones!

FitzPatrick also resigned in December 2008, from the boards of Smurfit Kappa, Aer Lingus, food group Greencore and investor, Gartmore Irish Growth Fund.

In case anyone has trouble appreciating the pressures on Aer Lingus they should consider Dublin airport traffic volumes. They fell no less than 17% in January with an underlying (ex weather) decline of 14%. That follows double digit falls in CY 2009 and is a direct consequence of a deep consumer recession and the introduction of a "Slan Abhaile" €10 tax per departing passenger last spring. These numbers also precede the start of a 40% rise in airport charges that will also threaten future capacity plans by airlines. The January figures are in stark contrast to trends in the UK and other EU states where airport volumes have stabilised since year end.

DAA bonds downgraded by rating agency

The beleaguered Dublin Airport Authority has been hit by a new blow - in the form of a downgrade to its credit rating.

Ratings agency Standard and Poor's has lowered its long-term rating on some of the authority's bonds from A- to BBB+.

The new rating places them just two notches above junk.

S and P says the downgrade, with negative outlook, is due to a big fall in passenger traffic.

It adds that it expects another fall in passenger traffic this year.

Irish economy to 'stagnate for 10 years'

Director of the Centre for European Policy Studies Daniel Gros said the eurozone countries must create a monetary fund and prepare for the insolvency of a euro country.

Ireland, together with Spain, is one of big losers from the current crisis because 20% of its GDP came from the construction sector, which has now collapsed. "Losing what is effectively 20% of your economy is not good. Ireland will have a very tough time ahead," he said.

He warned 10 years of little or no real growth may be optimistic given the experience of Japan, which is still in the doldrums more than 20 years after its construction boom ended.

There were 911,500 (11.6pc) fewer overseas trips to Ireland in 2009 compared to 2008, with a significant slump in British visitors to Ireland.

In all, 6,927,500 overseas trips were made to Ireland in 2009, the lowest since 2005.

The most recent figures available show the number of Irish travelling overseas fell for the first time in 18 years in summer 2008 -- down 12pc on the same period the previous year.

Visits from abroad to Ireland were also down by more than a tenth in the first half of last year, with 400,000 less visitors between January and June.

Bank of America and Barclays Capital, two leading oil traders, have told clients to brace for crude above $100 (£64) a barrel by next year, before it pushes relentlessly higher over the decade. This is a stark contrast from recessions in the 1980s and 1990s, when it took years to work off excess drilling capacity built in the boom.

"Oil has the potential to flirt with $100 this year. We forecast an average price of $137 by 2015," said Amrita Sen, an oil expert at BarCap. The price has doubled to $78 in the last year.
