Carload volume slipped 0.3% for the week ended March 6 on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, while intermodal traffic rose 19.3%, the trade group said Wednesday.
In the week ended Feb. 27, North American rail traffic rose 2.2%. For the first nine weeks of the year, North American rail traffic is up 2%.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic rose 11.4% last week, powered by a 21.5% jump in the volume of intermodal containers and trailers. Carload rose 1.1%. U.S. rail traffic is up 1.7% for the first nine weeks of the year.
Canadian rail traffic rose 6.6% last week, as a 19.1% rise in intermodal units more than offset a 2.8% drop in carloads. Canadian rail traffic is up 5.3% for the first nine weeks of the year.
