Ford Motor said Thursday that it has signed a deal with Tesla that will allow its customers to gain access to more than 12,000 electric vehicle superchargers in the U.S. and Canada.

Through the agreement, the Detroit automaker will double the number of fast-chargers available to its customers as it ramps up production of its EV lineup.

"Widespread access to fast-charging is absolutely vital to our growth as an EV brand," Chief Executive Jim Farley said.

Drivers of Ford's E-Transit, EV Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning will benefit from the deal starting in the spring of next year, the company said.

Ford's customers will need an adapter and software integration along with activation and payment via FordPass or Ford Pro Intelligence to charge their EVs at Tesla's locations.

In 2025, Ford's new generation of EVs will eliminate the need for an adapter to access Tesla's Superchargers.

"This breakthrough agreement comes as we are ramping up production of our popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and preparing to launch a series of next-generation EVs starting in 2025," Farley said.

Ford didn't disclose financial details on the deal.
