I hate acronyms. I was going to post the same question re cc's. Then i engaged the grey matter and deduced crypto currencies. Could be wrong. oao

another way to control via shorting. pm etf's has had a negative effect overall (not to mention questionable storage/management - lending phys to allow for shorting).

ETFs had a very positive impact on metals, like a ten year bull run. Why do you say ETFs will be negative when it offers another gateway into the market?

i assume cboe will be using btc as btc and not bch. bch could rise perhaps.

in fact anything not btc might be more successful

The futures markets that cash settle wont be driving the price, they will reference exchange prices not the other way round.

Alt coins on the other hand have little to zero value, network, or liquidity. Despite the unlimited proliferation of copy coins the Alt coin bull market has clearly reversed with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash steadily re capturing more and more value in the CC space. Yes there are plenty of get rich quick novice types of investor around who will be attracted to some alt coin or another, but it doesn't end well and the end is in sight.

Im not really in favour of the cash settled futures, but obviously its one step closer to ETF approval. It's going to be very difficult to make a regulatory case against Bitcoin ETFs if cash settled futures are permitted.

imo

McB.. I agree that the futures will be bad for BC. If you want to bet ON Bitcoin, you can simply buy the coin, but if you want to bet against it, that's been difficult until now.. I'm not sure I agree that there'll be a rush to get more people in first though...

BUT, since BTC are the only futures available to bet against CCs, anyone who thinks CC's do have a place in the modern economy still has plenty of other options, so I'm expecting some of the other CC's to pick up any slack if actual BTCs weaken.

general consensus that the futures markets will be bad for btc - this is probably correct but first there is going to be a nice rally to get longs in. then pound them.

Im no Nostradamus but I doubt Bitcoin topped the week before the first of many futures markets are launched.

My guess for 2018 high $95,000, for Bitcoin and Bitcoin cash combo.

in the BBC citation...

“It was enough to feed, clothe and house a whole Dutch family for half a lifetime, or sufficient to purchase one of the grandest homes on the most fashionable canal in Amsterdam for cash, complete with a coach house and an 80-ft (25-m) garden – and this at a time when homes in that city were as expensive as property anywhere in the world."

Have you also seen a picture of the Dutch family who were fed clothed and housed for half a lifetime, a small family perhaps?

The house is imaginary, an example of what could have been purchased but I take your point about the BBC.

As word spread that one could make ridiculous sums of money simply by buying and selling the bulbs, prices skyrocketed even higher. According to the BBC, in 1633 a single bulb of Semper Augustus was worth 5,500 guilders. 4 years later in 1637, the sum had nearly doubled to 10,000 guilders.

You may be wondering what a guilder is—the guilder was the Dutch currency up until the adoption of the Euro. Having said that, to put the above numbers into perspective, according to Mike Dash who wrote Tulipomania: The Story of the World’s Most Coveted Flower and the Extraordinary Passions It Aroused, “It was enough to feed, clothe and house a whole Dutch family for half a lifetime, or sufficient to purchase one of the grandest homes on the most fashionable canal in Amsterdam for cash, complete with a coach house and an 80-ft (25-m) garden – and this at a time when homes in that city were as expensive as property anywhere in the world."
