Definition of Bellwether

An event or indication that shows the possible formation of a trend and bellwether assets do the same thing for markets. The performance of certain companies, stocks and bonds can be analysed to indicate the condition of the economy and the direction of the market because their performance is strongly correlated with more general trends. Typically Bellwether companies and bonds are the market leader of their respective sectors.
