Posted at 09/2/2006 16:16 by edmundshaw Great idea; the old thread was a bit threadbare...John lee's occasional weekend investor column in the FT alone pays for all the FTs I buy and more! My favourite journo-investor, he put me onto NMD which has risen from 112p to 275p in 2 years, Christie group CTG, & Jarvis hotels (now taken out), also agreed with me (so to speak) on a number of other value plays like CKN, BTT (now taken over too) and James Fisher. (CTG is another recent investment of mine BTW.) Here's what he said about THB last weekend: "I am still not sure why awareness of niche Lloyd's broker THB eluded me for so long, as it offers one of the most attractive sustainable yields on AIM at 5.5% [note: when price about 80p]. I had already modestly invested and bought more following a meeting with founder Victor Thompson and CEO Frank Murphy. THB is a UK-based insurance broking group and has a low stock market profile - perhaps because directors and staff hold 80% of the equity. But it deserves to be better known" ... "acting as a wholesaler for other intermediaries as well as providing retail broking and risk management services to corporate and private clients"... He also commented that last year's hurricanes lifted premiums substantially, which should be of net benefit to THB. Reading the last accounts will fill you in on background; it provides services to an interesting subsection of the insurance industry. |
