- Computer usage efficiency. If a computer will not be in
use for more than 20 minutes, the monitor should be turned off. If
the duration away from the computer will exceed 2 hours, then both
the monitor, as well as the tower, should be shut down. This will
save on electric as well as limit excess heat coming from computer
units that will add to the building's cooling burden. This is
especially important to communicate to employees when there are
numerous computers in the building.
- Powering electronics. Utilize a power strip for things
such as printers, paper shredders, and other electronics. This will
facilitate the shutting down of electronics when not in use and
eliminate excess power drainage.
- Selecting, powering and maintaining appliances. Install
energy-efficient appliances to limit electrical use. These will
often have additional power-saving switches on them for even more
efficiency. Try to keep refrigerators between 30 and 42 degrees to
save energy and ensure that in regular cleaning, the refrigerator
is also dusted. Keeping refrigerator coils clean keeps energy usage
down. Look into coil vacuums for the best method of keeping
refrigerator coils clean.
- Lighting. Replace standard and halogen light bulbs with
compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFLs are much more energy
efficient and will also last longer, saving money. Turn lights off
when they are not necessary and keep them on a motion sensor in
areas that do not get used constantly such as office kitchens. A
timer can also be set up so that when the building is not in use,
so that lights automatically shut off.
- Cooling. Have air conditioning unit filters replaced
regularly for safety and efficiency. Whenever possible, keep blinds
closed to eliminate additional heat flow into the building. Many
air conditioners also have energy saving features that can be used
on days that are not as hot.
