01/3/2001 10:43 | Serina, Dermot Desmond is a rising star to whose coat-tails many of us could attach ourselves. However, I do not believe even he can upgrade Eircom - assuming he gets it. A better bet would be Greencore . DYOR. BK. | berkelly
27/2/2001 20:46 | Desmond to launch bid FINANCIER Dermot Desmond is now expected to launch a bid of more than euro 1.10 per share for Eircom and is on the brink of signing a confidentiality agreement with the company. Mr Desmond's company, International Investment and Underwriting, will get full access to Eircom's financial information when it agrees to the document's terms. serina | serina

23/2/2001 00:49 | Re. Ryanair Following an article in the Irish Independent last week which stated that Ryanair CEO Ml O'Leary had sold shares in the company, there is an interesting response from O'Leary in today's Irish Independent. I will open a new thread on it for interested parties. Darkspeed, Some shares on the ISEQ which I feel will outperform Smurfitt short term are :- IL&P - IPM Anglo Irish Bank -AIB DCC - DCC Look out for Greencore. They have just replaced their Chairman with a real good guy. This company needs a push in the right direction and it may come now. Otherwise they stand the risk of a takeover. BK. | berkelly
21/2/2001 23:54 | berkelly Ok, I may have exagerrated Elans influence on the ISEQ... As for Smurfit, I agree they have a hard struggle ahead of them but for a short term trade there is not many stocks to beat them on the ISEQ. They have traded between the 190 and 220 price for a good while now. Up and down, up and down, they are a short termers dream stock. Course that could end at any time. Strong support around the 170 mark so if they fall significantly below the 190 I would view a rise from 170 as a good buying point as well. jmho | darkspeed
21/2/2001 23:37 | Sensiblesid, I have no faith in Kenmare but then I have a fear of exploration stocks. Ever since Tynagh Mines in 1963. How's that for memory !!. Darkspeed, Your comment about Elan is no true. It did gain 59% and accounts for 20% of the ISEQ but look at post 24 above and you will see there is a good spread of gain. Ryanair gained 109%. Smurfit will find it hard to gain ground because of its dependency on the American economy. It has reported good figures but these were and for the future are dependent on agreement between all producers to keep production facilities under wraps. With pressure on earnings I cannot see this continuing for ever. Not even for all of 2001 if there is a weak economy in the US. BK. | berkelly
20/2/2001 22:05 | serina, might not be a bad thing. Stories are persisting about Bula, reports say they are going to announce some sort of tie up with another company. Darkspeed, sorry i did not notice your post earlier. KMR is about to issue a Final Fesibility Report before end of month. Last week Institutions took up stock at 20p in a placing, price now is 21/22. I can only say that if you buy them you won`t be disappointed. | sensible sid
20/2/2001 21:30 | Vodafone takeover in doubt 18:57 Tuesday February 20th 2001 The chances of Vodafone’s takeover of the mobile phone wing of Eircom are being thrown into renewed doubt this evening. Vodafone's share price has dropped dramatically, dragging the London stock market down with it. Eircell shareholders have the right to pull out of the deal i9f Vodafone's share price falls below IR£2.20. The current value is below that now. serina | serina
20/2/2001 00:38 | Guys , if you would like to be discussing these irish shares in person and good company why not come along to this enjoy | mealiff
20/2/2001 00:34 | cailin, smicker, Yes, am referring to Euro price sensible sid whats the story here? | darkspeed
18/2/2001 21:42 | darkspeed, smicker, bk, serina Take wee look at Kenmare Resources its about to go from minor league to major in the next two weeks. (or less) | sensible sid
18/2/2001 21:03 | Cailin, I'm sure darkspeed is referring to price in Euro. | ![]() smicker
18/2/2001 10:13 | Darkspeed, Smurfit(J), 190 ? L. | cailin
17/2/2001 23:36 | Every time someone mentions the fact that the ISEQ gained by 24% last year never seems to mention the fact that most of that gain was due to ELAN and if it wasnt for ELAN it probably would have been a - % btw Smurfit starting to look good for a short term punt. Not yet, but soon. I am waiting for about 190 and then waiting for it to show signs of upward movement. Hoping to buy as usual around 195/198. What does anyone else think? | darkspeed
15/2/2001 19:30 | BK, see ALBK starting to move up again, good sign coming up to results, High volume also. Glen Dimplex is rumoured to be building it`s stake in Kenwood Appliances, ALBK chairman Loughlin Quinn has big stake in Glen, possible bid, Ken price is motoring. Serina, did you see those 2x5 million buys of eircom after close, whats going on here, stake building? big trades all week. Might not see my Vod target of £2, Directors have bought shares. | sensible sid
15/2/2001 01:03 | sid/serina, If you are into Telco's, how about Cable & Wireless [CW.]. They are heading down toward £8.00. I bought @ £9.34 and will now buy again to average down. I think thay have massive potential. As always DYOR. sid, article in the Irish Independent today - The Irish equity market was 5th in the world last year gaining 15.5% against .4% across Europe, -5.6% for the UK and -1.4% in the USA. This is the total market nationally !!. I bet those investment managers who jumped ship early last year regret it now. BK. | berkelly
14/2/2001 22:21 | serina, i honestly believe that the best Telco play at the moment is Vod, this company is head and shoulders above the rest. I believe in the next week there may be a chance to pick them up at £2 stg or slightly less. I think there may be results coming out tomorrow from Dell, which are apparently not good, there is talk of job looses in Ireland and no doubt it will drag the Naz down and possibly Vod to my target. | sensible sid
14/2/2001 22:07 | sensible sid, I agree, so long as it is not another round of playing with the retail share holders by the Eircom board and friends in the press and high places. Off beam, when do you think Orange will be a really good buy? when it gets to btw 7-8 € | serina
14/2/2001 19:20 | serina, I see oBrien may have company in the form of Pierce Flynn, who apparently is being backed by D,Desmond among others. I think this can only be good as these heavy weights come head to head. It also shows that the Telco sector is very cheap in the eyes of these wise investors, they want in now when prices are depressed and they oboviously don`t see that being the case forever. Vod is holding the price back but these are in for a bounce i feel and could well be £3+ by year end. | sensible sid
14/2/2001 10:10 | Possibility of another bid now for the rest of Eircom (excluding Eircell). Price is not reflecting any great optimism although a Buy of 1 million has just gone through. | ![]() benchmark
13/2/2001 00:53 | Melfaraj, Fair point. EIR did indeed surge for 2 weeks and then died because punters saw that the company was totally overvalued. Hence my comments above. I would never risk investment in a launch with the expectation of exiting in two weeks ! Sid, The word on the street is the Jury Doyles is a far better investment than Ryan hotels. There is a possibility of a take over or privatisation of Ryans by a large holder. This will not lead to a surge as they are poorly perceived at the moment. Lardhead. Black is the BEST WHISKEY [not just Irish] !!! BK. | berkelly |
