I don’t think there has been much doubt for weeks if not months that a deal would probably been secured for the mining of the diamonds. What will of course be required is finance to get this underway and also to get BP into production.

Rosy Future for Zim Diamond Sector
September 12, 2019Tafadwa Muranganwa

By Mazvita Makuyana

Russian diamond mining giant, Alrosa says one of the motivations behind signing the $12-million joint venture (JV) agreement with national diamond miner Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) is to develop cooperation between Alrosa and its Zimbabwean partners and increase Alrosa’s presence in African countries.

In a statement on the miner’s website, Deputy CEO Vladimir Marchenko says they are upbeat of operating in Zimbabwe.

“Alrosa has started looking for exploration projects to create new diamond mining enterprises in the Republic of Zimbabwe.

“A JV is a major step in terms of cooperation with our Zimbabwe partners. We are committed to producing work in the exploration of new, promising areas and subsequent diamond development.”

Marchenko recently signed the JV agreement with ZCDC chair, Killian Ukama which paved way for Alrosa to have a 70 percent controlling stake in mining for the development of Greenfield projects.

The Alrosa deputy said, going forward they will invest more in the country based on the outcome of the exploration projects.

The world largest diamond miner also operates in Angola, signified by a JV agreement signed in 2015 with State-owned diamond group Endiama for exploration.

Alrosa also has a 41 percent stake in Catoca, which is Angola’s largest diamond mine.

Apart from the current exploration opportunities, several mutual benefits await Alrosa and the Zimbabwean mining industry.

“With the help of Alrosa, the development of new deposits will re-establish Zimbabwe’s position in the global market, introduce best international business management and governance practices, create operational transparency and result in revenue and expenditure controls, as well as contribute to the improvement of the social and economic situation in Zimbabwe and the wellbeing of people and communities in the mining regions.

“This will also enable Alrosa to channel its investments in the diamond sector correctly, subsequently ensuring the sustainable socio-economic development of the industry,” he said.

With exploration expected to begin in September, Alrosa intends to focus on Greenfield prospecting and exploration, with subsequent mine development and independent sales of diamond production in external markets.

The miner also hinted on its intention to start full-scale mining in Zimbabwe, which is the next step after exploration.

It plans to market and sell diamonds on the global market as Zimbabwe diamonds, by following its practice of selling rough diamonds ‘by ownership’.

Meanwhile, Marchenko states that Zimbabwe’s great potential lies in large diamond reserves, with deposits producing 3.5-million carats per year.

The Second Republic, under the Transitional Stabilisation Programme targets, the re-opening of closed mines, expansion of mines that are operating below capacity and opening of new mines.

The TSP also seeks to promote beneficiation and value addition, through domestic smelting and refining, to increase earnings from mineral resources.

The impact of mining goes beyond mineral exploration, exploitation, processing and value addition.

Mining is linked to many other value chain industries and is targeted to contribute over 70 percent of the country’s export earnings in 2018.

The first-half performance in minerals such as gold, coal, and chrome, among others, also point to better prospects for 2019, than the previous year’s forecast.

Mining proceeds present themselves as a necessary shot in the arm to the rest of the economy, with much more potential as mining revenues are ploughed back into the economy to create circular, self-reinforcing inclusive growth.
