The granting of options to the 2 exec. directors is quite interesting. Particularly to Ms Elliott whose career I've been aware of for many years. She 'clawed' her way up from working in bars in Whitley Bay to managing a bar there and achieving noteriety in local papers. From there she worked in various other bars in Sunderland and Newcastle eventually being appointed to Ops Director.

She's a smart / intelligent lady of about 32 and drives a nice silver BMW 3 series with a private plate - 'Curly'. All in all, quite sharp and I would assume she'll view the options (exercisable at £2.01 ish) as a gift horse.

The Sunderland bars have performed well this year, the mild weather over Christmas will have helped bars in the region immensely.

ULG are doing well in Sunderland - the city is currently undergoing rapid expansion in the pub/bar/cafe/club scene and as with Newcastle there seems to be enough custom to go 'round.

rbryant >>>>> yes i'm a newcastle lad and as far as ULG doing good, is purley a guess. The "town" has been busier, in general over the last 9 months. With more and more coach parties now coming to Newcastle, accomodation for some weekends has been limited or full. I know this for a fact as my company is a UK based coporate events / activities business. Most of our weekend work is stag and hen weekends based in Newcastle and all of our clients are given a rec. drinking route with VIP club passes. All of the pubs are on this route are owned by ULG. I must stress that I DO NOT WORK for ULG or have any partnership with them, but they do operate the best pubs in the main drinking area of N/cle. ULG have expanded further afield and i wouldn't like to guess how well they are doing in Sunderland, South Shields, Durham and Yorkshire / Lancashire. With ULG's recent application for a club at Jesmond (Gresham Hotel) this has attracted alot of resistance from the local residants, but ULG have done it thro a pre 1904 licence so ultimatley they will be granted permission. Jesmond has been for some time a "select" drinking area, attracting a "more affluent" client base.

All in all, because of the added facility and the increase in the general numbers visiting Newcastle you can deduct that higher revenues have been made from there core locations. As far as the interims are concered i can only GUESS that they will be better.

All the above is my opinion and should not be used in anyway as a reccomendation. I do NOT hold shares in ULG (still bloody cash poor)Please do your own research. If you want any further info i suggest you contact ULG and ask for Tim Wynn.

rescuer,

Are you a Newcastle lad then, and are you saying that ULG sites are doing good business? Any feedback out there on whether the interims will be more progress in the right direction? I am certainly tempted to add to my holding at this price.

havn't posted on here for ages but ULG are about to open a new club in Jesmond, Newcastle. It currentley trades under the name of The Gresham Hotel, but recently they obtained a pre 1904 licence which will allow them to operate as a club at this venue. The location has become the second most popular place to drink outside Newcastle Quayside and it attracts a more discerning client.

I too would like to see ULG drop back to under £2 simply to buy in at a cheaper price, but can't relistically see this happening. No doubt the Feb results will see tham beat forecast, Can't get moved in any of there pubs at the moment (i know it's xmas run up. Anyway's enough rambling, i'll watch this thread with interest.

Currently NOT holding ULG.

None except rumours of poor sales elsewhere in the pub biz (Wetherspoons), plus rising rents which shouldn't affect ULG with their primarily freehold sites.

Report from Nothing-Ventured.

Despite a grim day for rivals, pub and bar chain Ultimate Leisure has shown resilience, reports the Financial Times. Ultimate owns its own outlets rather than having to pay hefty rent bills like its counterparts and the FT reckons the leisure firm is 'good value' based on earnings growth.

According to Citywire, there is a positive article on Ultimate Leisure in the FT today, which mentions the low PE ratio of 8.2, and the excellent growth prospects.
Can anyone post the article.

From The Business

With an excellent record for profits growth and opening new venues, nightclub operator Ultimate Leisure gets a nod from the Business' AIM/Ofex tipster. Trading at 225.5p, Ultimate shares are a buy on grounds of a clever national expansion programme that has not lost sight of the group's Newcastle origins. The group is cash-rich and the clubs themselves offer a high-tech point of sale control system that bolster both financial controls and management growth.

Ultimate's a growth bet even if it lacks pizzazz

It is fair to say that Ultimate Leisure lacks the stock market pizzazz of some of its larger rivals. For a start, action at the late-night bars group is largely confined to the North of England – hardly the main stomping ground of most City analysts.

And while sector peers such as SFI and Regent Inns have borrowed voraciously to fund their get-big-quick expansion drives, Ultimate has taken a more cautious approach, adding a freehold here and there.

But the Newcastle-based operator is not to be sniffed at. It has proved a useful defensive play over the past few months, notwithstanding the recent wobble on the back of bleaker news from SFI and Old Monk.

Ultimate rightly maintains that its preference for freeholds protects it from leasehold nasties, such as rent hikes and high fixed costs. Plus, its sites could prove useful fodder if it ever wanted to raise significant capital in a hurry.

From the Independent:- Ultimate is happy to stick with what it knows best – running entertainment-led bars and clubs in working-class towns, which means it is unlikely to be lured by the excesses of London anytime soon.

Although the group has eschewed a brand template for its 24 sites, it admits there is potential for its "beach-themed" outlets. Swap a surfboard for a bull and you arrive at the group's latest offering, the rodeo-themed Coyote Wild that opens in South Shields later this week.

The news on Friday that recent trading remains "strong" and a pipeline of new openings should ensure that the company's growth momentum remains unchecked.

The shares, up 1p to 233.5p, trade on around 9 times earnings and should have further to go.
