MILAN (AFX) - Alcatel and e.Biscom SpA unit Fastweb said in a joint
statement they have won a 25 mln eur contract to develop a telecommunications
network for the Italian ministry of defence.
The initial phase will entail deployment of an optical fibre ring of about
1,500 kilometres linking military district headquarters, with delivery expected
for the end of 2004, the companies said.
"(Alcatel) do have a slightly larger proportion of the contract, but we
would not have made an announcement if our part had been small," said an
e.Biscom spokeswoman, declining to give the share.
The contract includes voice, data and video services, complying to stringent
security standards, the companies said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - A move up by European telecom equipment-related stocks
helped offset declines by technology shares from both sides of the pond.
The Bank of New York European ADR Index closed up 0.08 points at 114.28.
While the chip and hardware sectors declined in the U.S. following a tepid
first-quarter earnings forecast from Novellus Systems , stocks related to
telecom and mobile wireless equipment rose after Deutsche Telekom's reported
that its mobile phone subsidiary T-Mobile increased its subscriber base driven
mainly by growth at T-Mobile USA. Deutsche Telekom rose 18 cents to $20.78.
Other improving telecom stocks included: Alcatel up 10 cents at $16.81,
Ericsson rising 11 cents to $22.33 and Vodafone climbing 47 cents to $26.66.
Last week, Nokia forecast improving sales for the year, raising expectations
that the rest of telecom and wireless sector is due to show growth. Nokia shares
slipped 17 cents to $21.08.
