We don't have long to wait for news on the dividend and general trading conditions.

TOMKINS PLC

I write to advise that it is the intention of the Board of Directors to issue
an interim announcement on Tuesday 16 January 2001 in respect of the six
months ended 28 October 2000.

I'm in and loving it.

Another Sears Plc (dozy giant with great NAV ) just needs to be awoken.

My best stock this year and 2000.

I was really only talking about short term movements, but yes, actually I do think that if the techs had carried on through the stratosphere the Tomkins of this world would have had great difficulty making headway. Clearly if the mood of the market is such that tech stocks are ultravalued and traditional ones not valued at all, then that is exactly what will happen.

Earlier in the year many fund managers had trouble with both investors and higher management alike who demanded to know why their value funds were not increasing 50%, 100% or even 1000% like the tech stocks. So while the tech stocks were zooming up it would have been very difficult IMO to persuade people to invest in a fund that yielded "only" 25%. After all there are few investors like you, most of the investment market is driven by performance and league tables.

Of course you're right in that the bubble could not carry on growing, but what made it burst was not that investors realised that there was huge value in traditional stocks, it was that the tech stocks were suddenly perceived to be overvalued. All that money had to go somewhere and some of it went back into the traditional stocks.

The dot coms have fallen by 90% because they first rose to incredible levels. If Tomkins had risen to £140 (remember Baltimore?) it too would subsequently have fallen 90%!

There is a big divi due soon as well guys.

Personally I think the rise is due to it being top of the rampometer.

I think that stocks like Tomkins tend to go up when the techs go down and vice versa as traders switch from one to the other. If you look at the Tomkins chart the tech mood today followed near enough exactly the opposite path.

Why was there such a mark up here today towards close? Trades seem to be reasonibly divided slightly in favour of buys. Is there possible some news on the way or is it just the big trader in the sky taking pity on us:-)

They say the break up value is 250 plus so there is a lot of upside.
Oh happy days. I hope these shares peak in time for me to buy more cw.

Buy of 500k just gone through which certainly shows confidence building in this break out.

I'd be glad to see it get through the resistance at £1.55. 200k buy certainly hasn't done us any harm. I assume the strategic review under way will take a view on holding the dividend vs share buy backs. Will all depend on what the perceived end game is i.e. aim for a break up or make a go of it as it is. Certainly the return to core operations is flavour of the month at the moment so we may end up with a definition of what core operations should be and anything outside this should be sold off.

I think it would be silly to cut the dividend especially seeing how they were keen to throw away there cash to the market only a few months back.

Dividends are good for profile, while buyback often go unnoticed and etc etc etc....

Rewarding investors is surely better than relieving nonbelievers of thier stock.

Nonbelievers will soon get more enthusiastic when the price starts going up because a solid business is paying a great dividend, which attracts the value and income brigade.

Anyway divis are going to be high fashion shortly.... afterall 'didnt we know all along that these new fangled high p/e non divi paying companies were going to all end in tears.' :)
