stocks like tomk shoud be less affected by the new tax year US profit taking, as tomk is hardly up since the last year, imo.

there are many other old economy stocks which i would sell to take a profit

I'd like to think the dividend will be maintained but IME they are likely not to be. They are well supported but if I were in the management I would prefer a lower payout and more money in the business, even if it were just for buybacks.

PW,

Are you confident that the divs. will be maintained as the article in the telegraph today sees the value in these as a result of a break up mainly and believes that the divs will be cut?

Nipped in to buy some US ADR's today as the US had not shown a reaction to the positive UK comment.

Good day today considering all the red about. What are the exact dates for the interims? The chart will also continue to look healthier after today. Might be short lived though if the US continues down as sentiment in the whole market may become very negative.

It will be nice to see tomk close above 150.
By the way- can anyone tell me why AWG spends most of its time with a large spread. Only 5p spread at the moment but most of the time it is around 15 - 20.
If there is a rumour of a take over do the mm's keep a wide spread?

I was bottom fishing from 149 down to 135. I almost lost my nerve but it is nice when you start to see a little blue.
I sold Wiggins at 35 and bought back at 29.5. At the moment I'm feeling a bit smug but come Tuesday I could be in the red. I suppose that is why we get hooked.
Happy New Year.

THE COUNT---YOGI

I don't know about it being tipped today, but I've added another 50,000 shares in two 25,000 chunks to take my holding to 100,000 shares.

I also bought mainly on yield considerations. I think I have enough for now.

I hope I haven't given you all the kiss of death as I had to wait well over a year for Jarvis to start to go in the right direction!!!

The SETS order book has been very healthy today on the bid side as well.

Bought in yesterday at 1.43 with the divi the main thing in mind. Delighted to see some share price movement today though - was it tipped somewhere? I was keen to get in before new year as I feel it could get mentioned in the press as a good punt for 2001.

Good to see you on this thread! I don't think you'll find me disagreeing with a single word you say here!!

BTW, I remember you saying you were in MCR last autumn time. Are you still there?

Regards

Chris

Is the price dropping on low volume? What trades there are there are more buyers than sellers. In fact most days there are more buyers than sellers.

Well, I certainly hope your good fortune continues with this one.

I don't think I would be too unhappy if this went up strongly in January.

Well Im a big detractor of buybacks as previously posted.

A management that cant use cash to grow the business should be replaced by one that can. Everyone wants shares in a growing business, no one wants shares in one that isnt.

A cash pile never hurt the old GEC.

If they consolidate their management and get down to some optimising then this could be a great recovery story. Since the Hutchins affair they seem to be moving in the right direction; now if only they can show focus on building the buisness.

Presdient Bush/Smith and Weston must be good news for TOMK. If they sell they should at least get a better price.

THE COUNT---ALL

I couldn't resist, I added another 25,000 shares at 145.75p through the MMs - I had 25,000 shares on SETS at 144.25p but it looked as if I wouldn't get filled so for the sake of a penny or so I picked them up T10 from the filth.

The reason they are strengthening a bit further is that one of the financial news channels, CNN (actually, on editing this, I can tell you it was CNBC) I think, just gave them a mention as a stock to watch out for this coming year. It's beginning to look like a no-brainer. And with a lovely divi as well, yum, yum!

Those people who are still hanging on for a return of the '10 and 20 baggers in 6 months time' are going to have a rude awakening.

The tortoise always wins in the end as I am now doing in Jarvis. I would happily settle for the boring 10% - 25% per annum now. Mind you, with some of the value plays, we will probably see some hefty reratings so we could get returns of 50%+ on some of these 'boring' stocks in the coming year.

Value just has to start coming through now that reality has kicked in.

THE COUNT---BIOMAX

So, we see you joining us in the value sector, eh?

Nice one, and for once you were constructive as well in telling us about the Sunday Business article.

Nice one Maxie!

Let me give you a New Year's resolution to aim for. Try to make some friends! With postings like you made above, it's a good start. It's not all about money you know.

There I go again...I hope I'm not being too patronising.

Biomax; its my observation that people who see the future, because its 'obvious and staring everyone in the face,' always mess up on the timing. This means generally that things take a lot longer than expected.

If you 'get it' its easy to misjudge just how long it takes for the penny to drop for the rest.

Thats to say you may see a 50% gain in TOMK but dont expect to get it in a meesly 40 trading days. This side of next Xmas perhaps. However if you could boost your portfolio by 50% per annum every year for the next 10, you'd be a clever and happy man indeed.

Get rich slow!

TC and all,

i agree with you and hope TOMK will recover in 2001.

I would like to go as far as to say that, in my opinion, the major
breakout/share price recovery is likely to happen in January (Feb
latest) and Tomkins share price stands to gain from 20% to 80%.

Given one-two month period and avr possible gain 50%,
this will correspond to annualised return upto 600%, which is very
good by any standards!
