Yes me - but not many others it seems......

Topped up yet again, and things do seem to be happening, moving ahead in Tuscany to capitalise on the new Licence.

Hopefully the results should be out soon and we'll get an update from Teleunit itself on how the expansion is going.

Here is a fairly upto date piece from Lucent:-

"Lucent Technologies Teams with IBM to Deliver Major Expansion to Teleunit's Wireless Local Loop Service

FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY MARCH 09, 2005

Teleunit to deploy Lucent"s Accelerate™ solution to support voice, VoIP and data services

CeBIT 2005, 10 - 16 March
Hall 12, B30

HANNOVER, Germany / ROME - Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced that Teleunit S.p.A., Italy"s leading regional Wireless Local Loop (WLL) service provider, will deploy technology from Lucent"s Accelerate™ Next-Generation Communications Solutions to drive a major expansion of WLL service offerings - the connection between a home or business and the local switching office - in the Toscana region

The new technology will enable Teleunit to offer its small and medium enterprise (SME) customers carrier-grade services such as traditional voice, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and data. As the prime contractor for Teleunit, IBM Global Services will provide the end-to-end solution, including a range of Lucent"s services to implement a complete multi-service and circuit switched offering.

"Service providers are looking to companies like IBM and Lucent to provide value-added services in support of their critical business transformation needs," said Mauro Bonfanti, IBM Wireless Broadband & Sensing Solutions Executive South Region. "Our services and solutions provide Teleunit with the ability to offer new services to end-users while targeting future customer growth opportunities. "

Teleunit is the first operator in central Italy to deploy a new network based on capabilities of the Lucent PacketStar® (PSAX) Multiservice Media Gateways and the 5E-XC™ switch from Lucent"s Accelerate™ portfolio. The PSAX and 5E-XC™ technologies are flexible, highly scalable and reliable platforms that allow service providers to offer new carrier grade services to end-users. Teleunit plans to significantly enhance its offering to target 30 percent of SME business customers in the central region of Italy.

"Teleunit's Wireless Local Loop services have been a tremendous success in the Umbrian region, and Lucent is delighted to be chosen by Teleunit to build on that success by providing a new voice, VoIP and data solution for the Italian Toscana Region," said Massimiliano Volpe, southeast sales director, Global Business Partner, Lucent Technologies. Lucent's Accelerate™ solution will extend the value of Teleunit"s current network and will allow Teleunit to boost its performance and profitability."

Lucent's multiservice switching solutions already have enabled Teleunit to drive new WLL services in the Umbrian Region, increasing SME business customer penetration to the highest levels in Italy, since its initial deployment in 2003. The ability to generate additional revenue from the multiservice switching solution was the key business driver in the selection of the PSAX platform.

TELEUNIT IN TUSCANY. IN LONDON SHARES 51PCT UP
(AGI) - Perugia, Feb. 14 - Perugia-based company Teleunit, which was set up in 1997 in the area of S. Andrea delle Fratte in Perugia, rose 51pct at London's AIM reaching a maximum of 30 cents today. This strong performance by Teleunit S.p.A., a company operating in telecommunications and focusing, in particular, on the Internet and WWL connections, is a further evidence of the current positive trend. On the occasion of its listing in London's ATM on May 26 2004, Teleunit's shares were traded at 20 cents of a pound. The announcement of the arrival in Tuscany of the Wireless Local Loop technology for companies led to a rise in its shares that in February were traded at 18.50 cents. On February 8, an agreement with Wirelink was announced for the use of frequencies associated to the Wireless Local Loop in Tuscany and few days later the price of the share rose to 28 cents thus marking a 51.35pct rise in just ten days. That result has been improved today. The arrival of WLL in Tuscany and the further strengthening of Teleunit's business after the release on the market of a new product create an opportunity for the unbundling of the local loop dedicated to SMes ensuring Internet and wide connections. That will help this company with over 50 employees that may look for other markets in central Italy. (AGI) .

And this from the Company website, although my computer is so old I can't get the full thing up in pdf format,

"03/03/2005 Teleunit buys WLL Licence
Broadband provider teleunit has acquired a new WLL licence"

no announcement on the RNS though, unlike the 8th February deal which sent the shares racing up.

Xena I feel the same, this company will have first mover advantage in capturing huge numbers of customers for broadband, the timing is perfect, and then the cross sell with their other procucts/services. I'm sure this can double from here but perhaps even £1 is possible, the current rating is so low.

It looks like expansion is starting in Marche as well as Tuscany:-

article dated 26th January 2005

"airstar(TM) Selected for ongoing Network Expansion in Italy

SR Telecom further announced that its airstar product has been selected by Teleunit S.p.A, a major Italian telecommunications operator, for an expansion of its Broadband Fixed Wireless Access deployment in the Tuscany region. The total value of the current phase of this project, which marks the first extension of Teleunit's initial roll-out of airstar systems, is approximately CDN$1.2 million. Further expansions of the WLL infrastructure in the Tuscany and Marche regions in Central Italy are expected to take place throughout 2005.

Since 2002, Teleunit has been deploying airstar to offer its business users toll-quality voice and high-speed data services. The systems are supplied to Teleunit by IBM Global Services, the system integrator, which is also providing maintenance services for the Wireless Local Loop (WLL) infrastructure. Additionally, Teleunit is working within the IBM PartnerWorld network to address the Small and Medium Enterprise market in Central Italy.

"With its airstar product, SR Telecom provides us with a strong technological partner for our WLL deployment," said Gianfranco Cimica, Teleunit's Chief Executive Officer. "The airstar solution enables Teleunit to meet our customers' ever-growing need for efficient and reliable voice and high-speed data services."

"We are very pleased to support Teleunit in the expansion of its broadband network to additional key regions in Italy, where airstar is the leading solution. We are also delighted to be partnering with the system integrator, IBM Global Services, and we look forward to participating in the continuing roll-out of the network," said Pierre St-Arnaud, SR Telecom's President and Chief Executive Officer.

About angel

angel is a premier next generation Broadband Fixed Wireless Access product that combines the most advanced multiplexing (OFDM), Transmission (Non Line of Sight-NLOS), and modulation (QAM) technologies to deliver DSL-equivalent data rates and carrier-class voice services within significantly less radio frequency spectrum than other solutions. Additionally, angel's extensive network management capabilities optimize deployability and operability. Developed in close collaboration with a large service provider, angel boosts subscriber coverage to levels that can exceed 95% of a service provider's target market area, and remains cost effective in even the smallest applications"

It is good to see Teleunit getting onto a few radar screens and a nice neat breakout to boot. Strange how no amount of positive statements from the company could get the price moving and yet now......off we go!!!!

I think a few people got wind that something was about to happen hence good articles in The Business and Shares a couple of weeks ago.

Presumably results will be out in around a months time. A while ago Shares put them on an expected 2004 p/e of about 5 when they were 24p, so I guess we're upto about 6 now.

Plenty of room to grow and a management which are clearly interested in doing lots of deals and a neat bit of lateral thinking to circumvent the lethargic Italian civil service.

I have a feeling we shall never see 25p again.

WIRELESS local loop (WLL) was tried but spectacularly failed in several European economies in the 1990s. Long live wireless local loop, and perhaps a smallish Aim-listed Italian telecoms operator called Teleunit.

Wireless local loop, a microwave transmission technology, was positioned as the cheap alternative to running copper or fibre cable to a building for broadband and voice services. The UK's Atlantic, Ionica and Germany's Lantel all fell into the abyss trying to handle it. The problems were multiple and included rain interference, urban density, licence obligations, management quality and arguably no broadband market. However, it may work in Italy for very Italian reasons.

But why? After all, it does rain in Italy, microwaves have not changed, people live in towns and every one of Italy's 23m households has a copper land line. What's more, Italians are renowned for using the phone to talk but not for using broadband.

The answer is in subtle but critical differences. Timing is one element. Italy just began to show interest in broadband in 2004. According to Fulvio Cocini, Teleunit's de-facto chief financial officer: "It is now not possible to do future business in Italy without broadband transmission for data."

Even if Cocini were wrong about this, and he is supported by trends across Europe and some cogent macroeconomic arguments, it is easy to argue that Italians will jump at the opportunity to have a one-price voice service that comes with a data channel. That is where broadband is driving us.

Telecom Italia is offering 640mb broadband and will sometime in the next 12 months offer 1.2mb. Teleunit offers 10mb upload and 10mb download now.

This amount of bandwidth is looking like the upcoming standard across Europe, and lends itself to some good applications including video conferencing that actually works the way we all imagine it should do. You don't need to set up a mini television studio with attendant costs and you get to move the camera.

Although the copper network is ubiquitous, its qualities are not right for broadband in significant areas. The copper is too thin, or it is not buried underground or the distance between the building and the exchange is too far.

This makes broadband transmissions either impossible or unreliable and expensive to upgrade. In the UK and Germany this is much less true of the copper networks.

Emanuela Bevilacqua, one of Teleunit's technology officers, argues that problems surrounding WLL had a lot to do with network planning.

Very simplistically, if you can get the transmitter closer to the customer you can more or less eliminate the problems associated with rain interference. And, as one of my German colleagues put it, "the weather is better in Italy". Combine that with new kit that compensates for rain interference and the problems go away, 99.99% of the time.

But the true issue is the topography.

WLL works where it is relatively expensive to dig the trenches necessary for copper and fibre and where there are concentrations of medium-sized light industrial businesses.

Look no further than hilly Umbria, central Italy and the home of Teleunit. Surrounding provinces Toscana, Marche, Emilia-Romagna and Lazio have the same characteristics, only they are richer. Together they account for 30% of countable Italian GDP.

It is perhaps worth noting that about 97% of all Italian businesses employ between 50 and 250 people. Add to this a licence requirement to cover only 30% of each region and you get a model that requires just 15 base stations to wrap up Umbria.

This region is dominated by small-scale textile manufacture, food processing, steel finishing and art inspiring vistas. Teleunit currently operates only in Umbria but it is making a fair fist of it. Revenues were up 156% at the first half of 2004 year on year.

Of course that's not the whole story. For one thing anyone with experience, Italians included, will tell you that local political bureaucracy in Italy is a nightmare and that the regulator probably could not be slower if it tried.

Teleunit is nine months late in starting its Tuscan services, simply because the regulator has not got round to organising the licence auction yet, which was promised for summer 2004.

Much of the network in Toscana is in place and Teleunit says it already has customers signed up just waiting to spend. The delay in the licence is having some impact on the share price, which is now 19p, and less than the IPO issue price of 20p.

What appears to work in Italy is medium-scale business with real focus. And in that style Teleunit is fairly typical. Teleunit was profitable in 2003 and expects to do better in 2004. Enterprise value to earnings before interest tax and depreciation is about

eight times.

Raising capital in Italy can also be a challenge. Regional banks in Italy tend to stick to their knitting. Locally, one is more likely to get a E50m loan for a building project than E15m for a telecommunications network. And as Gianfranco Cimica, Teleunit's chief executive and family owner put it: "There has not been an IPO on Nuovo Mercato since 2001. So, we became the first Italian company to come to London's Aim." Quite.
