African Asian still have 12.6% of SLP so plenty more to sell if they want. They are likely balancing out the books..the big rise in share price has likely passed capital fund ratio limits

kazoom : Thanks for your reply and the link. Having read the Fool article, I can see that the author's use of the word “miner” raises more issues than the matter of semantic precision, when he says “As with any miner, there are risks”. Well, among the important differences between a tailings reprocessor and a miner is that several major risks for the latter are absent for the former. In particular, for the miner, the size, location, and quality of the resource are much less certain; and workers can be killed or injured in rockfalls or accidents with explosives. The author does not seem to be aware of these matters; nor does he deem the generally lower costs of the tailings reprocessor worthy of mention, when low costs are actually the best insulation against the risk of a drop in metal prices (which he does mention).

Overall, the Fool writer's casual use of the term “miner” points to his ignorance of Sylvania beyond its reported profits.

I agree with your other points too. I am much more likely to take a recommendation seriously if the writer has skin in the game (as I have with Sylvania). I am well aware of the counter-case — that the writer may be a pump-and-dumper. Distinguishing the genuine enthusiast from the latter is not trivial, and requires all one's faculty of judgement.

Hi meanreverter, maybe I should flesh out my comment somewhat.

I have written for "The Fool" in the past (and may perhaps do so again). So I should point out that the majority of the writers at the Fool are freelance private investors.

Whether they deserve the title "analyst" or not I think has to be considered on a case by case basis. There are some smart people that write for the Fool, but to be frank they are not always incentivised to write proper analytical content but rather a volume of attention grabbing fluff as clickbait for subscription services.

As a result the detailed understanding is not always there.

In fairness having reviewed again the article by Andy Ross

the references to SLP being "a miner" are probably not that important and one is just expressing the fact that SLP is exposed to commodity prices as miners are.

The original point I was responding to though can best summarised by asking : If Andy thinks that SLP can/will deliver a +400% gain (over an unspecified timescale) why does he own no shares.

Articles on the fool (and other places) can sometimes produce interesting insights that one otherwise might not have considered (not really the case here), but they should never be considered as important recommendations.

All of course IMHO.

egg : Not me. But kazoom (5480) thinks that an analyst getting this distinction wrong is enough to dismiss him out of hand, and perhaps disregard his tip.

Does anyone know how many years of production SLP has? If we assume it makes say usd25m in a "normal" year, how many years can it do it for? The market cap seems to be implying 18 months of current prices and then 10 years of normal prices. Is that fair or should it be 15 or 20 years of production? Thanks
