31/5/2021 08:49 | Using a bucket excavator to dig out the material in a tailings dump for processing could arguably be described as “mining” it, and such a company would be listed in the mining sector in the financial pages. (Agreed, within the mining business, tailings processors are distinguished from miners.) Incidentally, what would you call Central Asia Metals (CAML)? Did it become a miner only when it acquired Sasa? And what about mine developers? Are they miners only once they have started to dig their first pit, shaft, or adit? Perhaps only after starting commercial production? | meanreverter
31/5/2021 07:20 | In their RNS this is how they describe themselves: About Sylvania Platinum Limited Sylvania Platinum is a lower-cost producer of platinum group metals (PGM) (platinum, palladium and rhodium) with operations located in South Africa. The Sylvania Dump Operations (SDO) comprises six chrome beneficiation and PGM processing plants focusing on the retreatment of PGM-rich chrome tailings materials from mines in the Bushveld Igneous Complex. The SDO is the largest PGM producer from chrome tailings re-treatment in the industry. The Group also holds mining rights for PGM projects and a chrome prospect in the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. | rcturner2
30/5/2021 22:23 | My friend is a miner he mines bitcoin. | risa5
30/5/2021 19:55 | "Why tip a company if one doesn't own shares??" It constantly puzzles me why Motley Fool writers give very positive readouts on companies they don't own. Unless their rules have changed, then writers can have a position in stocks they cover, so long as they don't trade for 7 days either side of publication. Makes no sense at all to me - I might "phone a friend". In this case of course, the fact that Andy Ross thinks SLP is a miner, probably tells you all you need to know. | kazoom
30/5/2021 18:01 | Its fundamentally not a miner. | podgyted
30/5/2021 17:31 | It means they are not ramping for personal gains. But judging a stock based on fundamentals. | risa5
30/5/2021 17:11 | Why tip a company if one doesn't own shares?? Friends, relatives, business associates???????? | eggbaconandbubble
30/5/2021 14:22 | Andy Ross: Sylvania Platinum Sylvania Platinum (LSE: SLP), the South African platinum group metals miner has fallen from its year high. I think it’s a really great company and see the share price weakness as an opportunity. The company has a tailwind behind it because what it mines is very likely to be used in electric vehicle batteries in the future. On top of that, there is a belief amongst some investors that we might be in a commodities supercycle. Even if that’s not the case, I back the shares to do well. It’s a low cost miner, which should be good for margins. As always with a growing miner, there are risks to bear in mind. Notwithstanding that though, Sylvania Platinum is my top stock for June. Andy Ross does not own shares in Sylvania Platinum. | risa5

30/5/2021 08:34 | OK my mistake! 1 x big toe = 40cc (British Standard, with nails clipped at 37 Celsius - body temp!!!!) 1kg gold = 52cc 1 kg Rhodium = 80cc £1m Rhodium = 1.4 kg = 112cc = 3 x Big toes! NB. £1m Osmium would be about one big toe! ? Are we off topic here? :-) | eggbaconandbubble
29/5/2021 22:58 | ebb. FWIIW Rhodium is only slightly denser than lead, think about lead fishing weights. | freddie ferret
29/5/2021 21:59 | ebb. Density of gold is around 19.3g/cc. So 10% of that would be 1.9 so Osmium is only around 17% more dense than gold. £1,000,000 = $1,400,000 Rh around $25k So $1.4m buys you 56 Toz Rh. 56 Toz Rh is a hell of a lot bigger than your big toe it is over three and a half pounds weight. eggbaconandbubble 29 May '21 - 21:33 - 5469 of 5471 0 0 0 Highest specific gravity of a stable element is Osmium at 22.57. that's about 30% heavier than gold! If I've got it right... a million quids worth of Rhodium is about the same size as your big toe!!!! | freddie ferret
29/5/2021 21:42 | I think you twigged it. There are several short half life radioactive elements with calculated densities in the range 26-28g/cc I will now try you on another one. Which elements do not have a melting point at normal pressures. | freddie ferret

29/5/2021 19:05 | Ah but what is the densist metal? | freddie ferret
29/5/2021 19:03 | Probably ok, as rhodium melting point is 1964C and for Fred, Ruthenium is 2334. | bbluesky
29/5/2021 18:29 | Still short of its all time high circa 30,000 bucks an ounce! Be nice to have a few Kgs of that tucked behind the AGA! | eggbaconandbubble
29/5/2021 18:19 | I was not around yesterday. So we had Rh $22,000 -> $23,250 Wed NY -> Thurs NY Then $23,250 -> $25,500 Thurs NY -> Fri NY (NY is New York btw). Means a $2250 rise in one day, which is huge, 'aint seen nothing like it before. None of the others doing anything exciting, Ru holding at $800 (its previous record from yonks back). We see what next week brings. :) | freddie ferret
28/5/2021 21:21 | Oh, OK! If you say so! ;-) | eggbaconandbubble
28/5/2021 20:58 | I think it's fine to stray off topic from time to time. Where else do you put a discussion of something obliquely relevant to SLP and interesting in its own right? Agree, it should not be allowed to get out of hand. But the occasional wander slightly off-piste is not an issue as far as I am concerned. | saltraider
28/5/2021 19:26 | EBB, I helped go off topic, and think the occasional deviation is OK, but take your point and agree. Prefer we keep this to SLP as much as possible. It's a good BB as it has very little nonsense on it. | greggphilips88
28/5/2021 19:07 | I welcome ideas from others who hold the same stocks so please post away. | rcturner2
28/5/2021 18:55 | Dear Mr Speaker, I don't think we are far off topic and some interesting points, given that ST is certinly an influence on price movement. Enjoy the long week-end! | bbluesky
28/5/2021 18:12 | Could peeps respectfully post their investment strategies etc. on another BB and please leave this board for messages specifically pertinent to SLP. Thank you! | eggbaconandbubble |
