Nearly bought these after the last update....rather glad I didn't.
I accept that people need to sell shares but I am rather less happy about the hefty 11% discount required to place just 5% of the stock especially given the market driven recent falls.
I am watching this carefully and if it finds a bottom here I will take a stake.

Ever expanding fashion business SuperGroup plc still looking good

Fears pre-Christmas were the unseasonably warm weather would dent SuperGroup’s performance through the festive period, but not a bit of it.

Analysts have expected a fall from grace for the owners of the SuperDry brand before, but it just has not come and its latest trading update for the 11 week period through to January 11 shows revenues are up.

The Cheltenham headquartered group opened 11 (net 2) new stores in the period, of which four were in Germany (including a 20,000 sq.ft. store in Cologne), adding a total of 64,000 sq.ft. to its trading space.

Euan Sutherland, chief executive officer, said: “Having made further good progress through our peak trading period our focus remains on delivering our strategic plan to create a global lifestyle brand.

“This encompasses the continued extension of the Superdry brand and the execution of clear global retail growth opportunities, under-pinned by ongoing investment to strengthen the business.

“With a positive customer reaction to our latest product developments, a strong pipeline for new stores in our targeted European markets and established momentum in e-commerce, the board remains confident in delivering underlying3 profit before tax for the full year in line with analyst expectations4 and in the brand's continued long-term growth.”

Interesting update, reads okay but concern around the drop in LFL sales growth since October update. H1 2015 saw 17.2% LFL growth compared to 1.2% growth in the Xmas period. Could suggest difficult trading conditions associated with mild weather. Wait and see.

One of the quality retailers out there. My portfolio is heavily biased towards retailers (mainly pure online plays). Just wished I bought a few more of these than I did.

SuperGroup - Super results (hl.co.uk research)

Our View:

First half trading shows SuperGroup trading well and confidently executing its strategy of expanding the international store base, as well as further building out the UK estate.

Fashion is intrinsically risky; the more fashionable a retailer is trying to be, the more risks it has to take that its customers will look at the clothes and shudder. Get it right though, and the frocks fly out of the shops at outrageous price tags.

SuperGroup had a few wobbles in the early years after listing. A relatively young, fast growing business, it quickly ran into growing pains as its infrastructure struggled to keep pace with demand. Management was also tested and eventually, CEO and co-founder Julian Dunkerton handed over the reins to Mr Sutherland, in order to concentrate on the branding and design. That's left the creative side of the business under the control of someone who clearly has flair, with a retailer accustomed to running a large, complex business in charge of the mechanics. That makes a lot of sense to us.

Execution now looks to becoming a strength, not a weakness for the group, with the only blot in the copybook being the lengthy turnaround of the US business, but even there, progress looks to be coming through. With strong growth in new space and the successful launch of the new premium price range in collaboration with actor and fashion icon, Idris Elba, SuperGroup looks well set to cope with the stronger comparatives ahead.

Fashion can be risky, but the Superdry brand has shown it can travel well and the business is still immature. Growth through new openings, or buying in franchisees should be capable for some time to come. So long as Mr Dunkerton keeps sending the right outfits down the catwalk.
