Read across from the Aviva assets management numbers.
I'm surprised if anyone is surprised.

Head of the Times business team, Oliver Shah has SLA as his share tip of 2019, (as of 30.12.18 it was 258.8p). His tune was as follows; "The share price halved during 2018 valuing the business at £6.6bn. If the board can stop the haemorrhaging - and I admit it's a big, "if" - that could look cheap".OH DEAR! Snot looking good Oliver.

I don’t hold much optimism, hope for best but expect the worst. Expectations are low from my side as we expect revenue slide, but hope EPS is supported by the mass share BBs. Not in for short term so I fully expect they follow AV and LGEN and protect the Divi

After seeing the reaction to Lgen the market is very fickle. Not sure what to expect on 13th but this could tank !

What an company!

Just 'phoned SLA to arrange a pension draw-down and been told (by an automated voice system) to call back in an hour as "to constantly improve our service our colleagues are currently in training. Please try back in an hour".

Why couldn't they train them at 7am this morning, at 8pm tonight, or last/next Sunday?

No wonder this company is heading downwards - fast.

PHNX have declared a 3.5% rise in their divi and share price is doing nicely.

MCunliffe, I agree on principle with your view. Don’t see a divi cut as this would be also a throat cut to the board. So I too expect at least the 15p mark. The big doubt is the revenue losses and how this will be solved in 2019/2020. I think there’s certainly a lot of doubt in short term the share price can improve dramatically in 2019, but clear future action plan will be fundamental

The buy back has been a disaster and a complete waste of money.

Final divi has generally risen each year by about 8% except, last year it was a 7.1% rise.
Given the share buy-back and hence less shares attracting a divi - but, crucially, lower profits likely to be the case, I'd expect anything less than a 5% rise (so, about 15pence) to be really bad. Holding at 7% (so, 15.3pence) would be OK and above that - a miracle.

Given a normal situation the massive share buy-back should have provided a potential for a much larger rise in the EPS.

If EPS is flat or even down it has to beg the question "why initiate the buy-back in the first place?". Director's bonus targets may have been the driving influence at the outset - as previously posted - most bonus deals work on the share price.

Ken I totally agree no investor benefit on face value but if SLA have reduced their share pool by 15%+ since last years mega buyback consolidation then at least they must maintain divi as clearly EPS has been supported somewhat. It all depends on revenue statement & of course cutting out the fat. I agree we need to save 2M by cutting one of the CEOs. The share price has been dismil and if they were in a major SH position they would be screaming out for change .. all will be revealed .. soon

Agree why Directors prefer buybacks, even when (as with SLA buybacks) they prove a waste of money unless done at a bargain price. But Companies like SLA are also very reluctant to cut the dividend. Cut the dividend and Income Funds can want to sell.... which puts further pressure on the share price in addition to the downside from the dividend cut itself.

From the small investors point of view special dividends when they can be afforded, on top of the ordinary dividends, work FAR better than buybacks. BIG SLA share price fall since they started buying back shows that so clearly.

It's simple. With buybacks investors don't receive ANY money but with special dividends they do and they can do what they like with it. Whereas buybacks work best for the Directors as if their bonus pay is linked to eps, then buybacks mean eps will be higher than it would have been without buybacks.

Many private investors AND PROFESSIONAL COMMENTATORS just swallow the nonsense that buybacks "reward investors." They don't. But they often reward Directors. No wonder so many Companies go for them.
