Took an initial position here this morning in my Equity ISA portfolio. The current projected yield of 8.7% to good to ignore with some margin of safety should there be any dividend cut in the future.

Perhaps SLA should have bought Phoenix shares rather than their own :-)

yes agree Cyberian. With Brexit turmoil it could easily drop further but I have to decide soon as its still a great return on dividends even if I buy now, 8%+ but im greedy and want 9% lol

I think this share will come good eventually ....in the meantime just taking the dividend and holding through all the turmoil.

Agree edmund...saw the Phoenix results the other day, and HDFC Standard Life shares in India are looking quite strong again.

Very good looking update from Phoenix yesterday - which SLA holds 20% of. According to my calculations, SLA should be in line for nearly £70m a year in dividends from that shareholding.

nico9...you may still be lucky. As for Brexit, I would think that PM May has something up her sleeve that will help resolve the apparent impasse....she has to prioritize her deal but bound to have some strategy if it fails on 2nd or 3rd vote the week after next. Personally feel another referendum would not be in our interests as divisions are bound to remain, and this would be reflected in any peoples vote or whatever is decided. The fact that Corbyn has admitted that it could take them 2 years of negotiating with EU on a future deal is a big turn-off for most people I would think. In the meantime a China/US deal is perhaps more significant to events over coming days...hopefully they will agree something mutually acceptable...that would help market sentiment in a positive sense.

IF Corbyn gets in to power and wants to renationalise utilities (or anything else) we will need to be fully out of Europe otherwise he'd be breaching EU law.

I don't believe Labour want to exit the EU.

I don't believe we'll EVER fully exit the EU.

I owned Halifax shares and they were effectively "stolen" from me some time back without the interference (at least directly) of the government of the day. Same with Bradford and Bingley.

Totally agree tornado re: Corbyn, sold all my CNA earlier this year for that very reason............for a loss.

Thanks MCunliffe1, I would already be in utilities but unfortunately I’ve have great fear of the Corbyn factor and that prat taking us back to the 70s. Unfortunately the tories are only making it more likely this worst nightmare could happen. Won’t go there until he’s completely of the scene. We didn’t think Brexit vote was likely so a Corbyn vote is impossible eh ?

United Utilities is always a good defensive stock. tornado12 even though they are focussed almost solely on the UK - and mainly in the North West.

60% of my portfolio is in dollar driven companies, but the other 40% are U.K. focussed. They will drop without any doubts if Brexit plan is thrown out. I think there is a very good chance that will happen so makes no sense for me to take any decisions until it’s clear. Either way I’m not pulling out of these companies including this one. I’m in for long term but obviously for growing my investment it’s all about timing & which one

FTSE shouldn't "tank" but the currency will. Hence, FTSE100 members, earning the bulk of their profits in currencies other than Sterling will, when such is converted, earn more pounds Sterling than otherwise if our currency was strong.

But, the markets don't follow logic - just as our MP's will not.

D day is 11/12 and Brexit vote. A vote down seems very likely and if happens FTSE will tank. Waiting to see what happens and will top up if the price vs risk is right for me

Only 276k shares bought back yesterday. So less availability, which I take as potentially a positive sign for the share.

Good to see Phoenix Group shares up strongly today, and HDFC SL also quite strong...so the connected parties are a positive for SL, and long may they continue. GS purchases yesterday were quite limited so maybe PI investors are now holding off selling, and who knows maybe adding. Very interesting few weeks ahead with Brexit drama continuing, but on balance there maybe more relief than added anxiety to what the outcome will be.

I'm surprised to see SLA increasing their holding in INDV, they look moribund following the court ruling announced yesterday. Admittedly, there is massive upside if they are successful on appeal but I wouldn't be gambling on that.

Edit: I suppose it isn't necessarily the case that they are buying for themselves.
