Brando, agree this is quite a civilised thread. There are a few of us who know a bit about the product they sell, can judge quality and price pretty well and therefore have a bit of an insight into margins. Also when NAV and future profits are so dependant on the value of the stock and on finding buyers, it is very important to try to guess whether that stock is an albatross round their neck, or the springboard to great things.

A lot depends also on becoming the internet platform of choice. Active stamp buyers can also give a bit of insight into the quality of the market place.

None of us are derampers, just trying to reflect on the results and the investment proposition. I do think the SG brand is underused and underexploited: hence I like SG as an investment. BUT not at this price.

I would say this board is relatively civilised and 'non-agenda' driven compared to many on Advfn.

I bought four unmounted mint Gold Coast Queen Victoria blocks the other day on ebay. Perfect perforations, pristine gum (untoned)... cat value for single stamps, lightly hinged would be around £180 a la Gibbons. Blocks, and unmounted command a premium. I paid £39. No way on earth would Gibbons have sold me these stamps at that price, and they couldn't have improved on the quality.

So while ebay is full of junk, it is also full of gems.

Brando- I agree on the possible overvalued share price. If sales continue to slow down, not just on stamps but on gold coins too. The pe ratio is very high and the fallout could be messy !

Im truly thick on the computer, but proud of it :-) had a look at the Stanley $4 dollar jubilee scott and on e-bay could only find two unused, one 449.99 mounted mint and a 499.95 lightly mounted with a thin and tiny gum loss. I will have to have another look for the £731 as I think that would be the only one you could compare to the Stanley £950. What im trying to say about Stanley`s stamps is. I agree you pay top dollar but you get top quality. I could not compare those two e-bay $4 dollar jubilee scotts i seen with the Stanley offering because they are not the same quality. you see most of the stamps that are offerd on e-bay wouldn't make the Stanley shop, they would just damage the Stanley brand. Im looking at stamps from the long term investment potential. so mint unused, have to have good centering, brilliant colouring good perf`s and if they are hinged light or otherwise forget them. im not saying other dealers don't compare to Stanley, they do. but if you buy a stamp of the exact quality of a Stanley offering off another top dealer, I think the price will be comparable. graham, i would like to look at the image of the brunei $5 that realised $850 at Robert siegal did have a go but failed, how do I do that please. last one Stanley has a block of four Canadian $1 dollar war effort`s for 150 and a single example for 50 quid, you can get these very cheap on e-bay as single`s but they are space fillers. so what would you pay please for a block of four, without the bend that Stanley`s has but colouration that would knock their present example for six! Having said all that I may still short Stanley in due course because I think sales will continue to slow due to the QE effect on the stock market`s. The herd wont look to safe havens for a while. regards

The point with SG is that they obviously talk their own book when defining catalogue price- which along with Scott and Yvert etc are the way the 'value' of a stamp is assessed. They retail stamps at or near their own cat value; most collectors know that they can get good examples at much lower prices elsewhere - be it online or at auction.

Putting aside Brunei for a moment (nice choice though...!), SG's valuation of GB stamps from the QV era is outrageously overcooked. If inventory forms part of the company's valuation, then they are overvaluing themselves!

Superior, you chose a pretty rare stamp. Well done. I suppose the point is that for stamps that appears to come up only a few times a year, SG may be one of only very few places. I collect Canada. Take the $4 Jubilee Scott 64, SG 139. Not a super rare stamp, but a collected one. Prices on Ebay for Mint or MNH, there are 8 examples I can see, ranging from £731, to £572, to £501, £499, £450, £295

SG price £950 for the one example they have. better choice, better value elsewhere.

here you go graham- chose this one because I like it. not massively priced so should be more dealers in this price range. They want £800....Brunei Japanese occ 1942-unused sg j18 . this is their description- unused 1942-1944 $5 carmine/green, type1 h/s in violet, upper marginal,fresh o.g (usual flat gum) slight gum crease but very fine appearance and rare(cat £1000)." I assume without the slight gum crease it would be priced at a £1000 ? " look forward to your examples. Regards

Superior, pick me a stamp from the SG listings, any stamp, any country and almost guarantee that could easily source a better quality stamp, cheaper. of course on EBay there is a range, but for most say £2000 stamps there will be multiple copies on EBay. And some will be pretty rubbish, but I almost guarantee you that, from a respectable seller, you will get one far cheaper on EBay. if you do not like it on EBay, just send it back.

It's all about the brand, SG. is a super well-known co., a bit like Christie's or Sotheby's, that is the value, to stamps what Walker's is too crisps!
