The new CEO of engineer Smiths (SMIN) Paul Keel has defended the company’s conglomerate structure, following plans by General Electric and Toshiba to break-up their diversified structures to extract better shareholder value.

For the time being investors seem fairly relaxed about Smiths, with the shares bid up 0.5% to £15.03 by the close.

I watched the Q&A, really like what they were saying. Company seems a solid investment. Shame the dividend isn't a bit bigger but I'm more than happy to hold through the buy backs and see what happens.

High-performance contraband detection device will help keep Japanese ports of Kobe and Tokyo safe

Smiths Detection, a world leader in threat detection and security controls, has signed a contract with Japanese Customs for two high-performance HCVS Hi Energy 9 MeV, interlaced and dual-scan cargo control systems display, intended to control trucks and freight containers at the customs posts of Jonanjima in Tokyo and Mizushima in Kobe. Installation of the devices will begin in April 2022.

The enhanced HCVS X-ray Fixed Control System employs a new and modernized conveyor mechanism, which strengthens security controls by scanning trucks (including cabs), containers and entire vehicles for threats and contraband products. Capable of distinguishing between organic and non-organic materials, the HCVS system reduces the need for manual checks while ensuring fast and reliable results. It is already deployed in various ports in Japan and other international ports, such as Antwerp in Belgium and Haifa in Israel.

Market report:

Chief executive Paul Keel, who took the helm in May, said a global shortage of semiconductors, components used in all kinds of electronics, as well as the ongoing crises in energy costs and shipping will not hit the firm as badly as some other companies.

Keel highlighted the group’s local supply chains across the 50 countries in which it operates and said the surge in energy costs would be a ‘tailwind’ for its energy business John Crane, which he said is helping customers ‘navigate the transition from petrochemical to cleaner energy sources’.

We lose £110 million on pre tax (annually) from the sale of Smiths Medical - a large chunk of profitability.

On the plus side should be 10% less shares in issue - approx 12.6%
on the current SMIN share price.

At least a £15 million annual interest saving on lower
net debt, plus a £15 million annual saving on lower pension contributions from FY '22.

Net debt should fall to somewhere around £400 million, or under.

$500 plus value in the 10% of ICU shares - at their current SP
think it's nearer $600 million approx.

Investors Chronicle :

Smiths well poised for renewed opportunities

Following restructuring measures, the group is in better trim to take advantage of a bounce-back in its end-markets.

The localised nature of Smiths’ supply chain arrangements means that it is not being unduly affected by the unholy trinity of semiconductor, energy and logistics issues. And the improved efficiencies are also reflected in a 125 per cent cash conversion rate, which fed through to decreased borrowings and a 40 per cent hike in free cashflow to £383m.

Performance remains chequered across the group’s business segments, but continued working capital discipline helped to boost ROCE by 140-basis points to 13.2 per cent. Market challenges notwithstanding, a forward rating of 14 times Investec’s adjusted earnings forecast is not overly demanding, particularly given a prospective dividend yield of nearly 3 per cent.

Buy.
