WASHINGTON (AFX) - General Motors Corp and Royal Dutch/Shell unit Shell
Hydrogen said they have teamed up in the US to promote and help begin the
commercialisation of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The centerpiece and foundation of the partnership will be a real-life
demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and fueling infrastructure
technology in the Washington DC area between GM and Shell Hydrogen (US), the
statement said. The demonstration will feature the nation's first hydrogen pump
at a Shell retail gas station to support a GM fleet of fuel cell vehicles.
The companies said the partnership plans to focus on on three key areas:
increased awareness and understanding on the part of policymakers, regulators
and the general public in the US via demonstrations of the combined hydrogen
technologies; combining the expertise from both the vehicle and fueling
infrastructure sides; and "experience and learning" from the trial under
real-life, real-time conditions.
"GM and Shell will provide an entire system -- from the generation and
distribution of hydrogen to a retail station, and the storage of hydrogen on a
vehicle to the actual vehicle itself".
Under the terms of the MOU between GM and Shell Hydrogen, Shell's hydrogen
station is expected to be operational by October 2003, with GM's commitment to
use the station for support of its vehicle fleet, which will arrive in
Washington DC in May of this year.
Shell Hydrogen CEO Donald Huberts described hydrogen as a "clean and
abundant energy carrier" which can be extracted from water or from natural gas.
When used in a fuel cell vehicle, the only exhaust is water.
The New York Times cited GM vice president for research and development and
planning Larry Burns as saying that the six experimental minivans that are
scheduled to arrive in Washington in May have cost more than 1 mln usd apiece,
but the company still believes it can produce a "compelling and affordable car"
by 2010.
The paper said some experts wonder if the cars will ever be affordable,
however, with some environmentalists -- while supporting the development of
environmentally friendly vehicles -- sceptical whether the government initiative
will ever get off the ground.

How come share pice is falling in the midst of an oil price surge?
(I'm a novice, I would have expected a rise as most oil price rise = pure profits)

Great buy if you are not in a panic rush, the longer the iraq issue is undecided the better for shells stock but in any event the stock is cheap at anything under 4.00

oil is still going up for a barrel of crude and this may well continue. since shell makes most of its money from barrels of crude this means that the earning potential is still good.

This means that it is cheap. £4.00 is a safe prediction.

the only thing that will cause a problem with this shares growth is the opening up of oil from iraq but my bet is shell has a strategy for dealing witgh that and will make money in a different way. long term this means that it will increase the number of barrels which will compensate for a falling crude price. Remember though there is no guarentee of iraqs oil being available and that means more increases in the oil price short term. the share price should follow it.

Investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein on Wednesday reduced its rating on oil company BP Plc (LSE: BP.L - news - msgs) to "reduce" from "hold" on signs the company's growth in earnings and dividends was set to slow.

DrKW also cut its price target on the stock to 390 pence from 445p.

Financial Times

The Lex Column:

*Blinded by the light - BP (LSE: BP.L - news - msgs) 's (BP.L) presentations to investors are a bit like firework displays. There may be washouts sometimes, but you always know you will get more razzle-dazzle next time. Already, BP's returns, at 13%, are weaker than those of Shell (SHEL.L) and ExxonMobil. That gives it less of a cushion when the world does not run as smoothly as its
presentations

A current 4.15% divi yield which moves on average +3% per annum or inline with inflation plus a AAA rating.

Its a good income play at these levels.
