27/11/2003 05:54 | BEIJING (AFX-ASIA) - Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell Group's unit Shell Solar has won a contract worth 2.7 mln eur to supply solar electricity to 26 remote Chinese villages in the southwestern province of Yunnan and the northwestern region of Xinjiang, the China Business Times reported, without citing sources. The newspaper said that under the agreement, Shell Solar will install solar electricity generating systems with an expected total capacity of 200kW in those villages within the next year. It said the agreement forms an initial part of the Chinese government's national solar electricity generating project, which will be funded by Deutsche Kreditbank AG and China's finance ministry. Shell Solar initiated a large program in Xinjiang last year to provide solar electricity for 78,000 rural families, and provided solar electricity generating systems with a total capacity of 2.4MW to villages without electricity in Tibet and the northern region of Inner Mongolia, the report added. 25/11/2003 11:37 | CAIRO (AFX) - Royal Dutch/Shell Group said it made a new gas discovery off Egypt's northern coast, in partnership with Malaysia's Petronas Carigali and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company. The team drilled to a planned total depth of 3,613 meters in the first of three exploration wells planned in the Northeast Mediterranean Deepwater (NEMED) Concession, the company said in a statement from London. "The well is confirmed a discovery, which has significantly extended the known distribution of hydrocarbons into the far outboard area of the Nile Delta, some 100 kilometers northwest of previous discoveries," it said. The well is located approximately 150 kilometres north of Alexandria in 2,443 meters of water, setting a new water depth record for drilling in the Mediterranean, it added. The well was operated by Shell and Bapetco, a joint venture of Shell Egypt and the Egyptian General Petroleum Company, the company said. lc/mb/cmr | maywillow

09/11/2003 18:16 | TEHRAN (AFX) - French oil company Total and Statoil ASA of Norway have joined talks for contracts to develop Iran's massive Azadegan oil field, the state news agency IRNA reported. An official from the National Iranian Oil Engineering and Development Company, Ali-Akbar Vahidi Al-Aqa, told IRNA that talks with the two firms were already underway, confirming that Japan no longer has exclusive negotiating rights. The official said Royal Dutch/Shell and Italy's ENI SpA had also been invited to enter talks on the field, considered to be Iran's most important with estimated reserves of 26 bln barrels, but had both refused. The Iranian government had offered preferential rights to a Japanese consortium during President Mohammad Khatami's visit to Japan in 2000. Japan and Iran agreed in 2000 to start negotiations over the field, but Iranian officials warned that a period of exclusive signing privileges for the Japanese consortium expired at the end of June and other companies could now be considered. The US government has been trying to persuade Tokyo to drop the investment due to concerns over Iran's nuclear programme. fpn/sas/kir/ak | maywillow

02/11/2003 15:40 | RIYADH (AFX) - Saudi Arabia's Supreme Petroleum Council approved a gas project with a consortium which includes Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Total SA, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said. The council, which controls the oil industry of Saudi Arabia, "gave its agreement in principle to the project," SAP said. Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Nuaimi last month said the consortium also includes Saudi Arabia's national oil giant Saudi Aramco. Under the agreement, the consortium will create a new company for the gas exploration and production in the Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter) in the south of Saudi Arabia, Nuaimi said. Shell will hold a 40 pct stake in the new company, while Total and Saudi Aramco will hold a 30 pct stake each, the minister said. Investments for the project are expected to reach around 2 bln usd, although no figures have been announced on the quantities of gas involved. paris@afxnews.com afp/lwl/bam | grupo guitarlumber
