John Redwood@johnredwoodWe have just lived through more days of little wind power. The electricity industry had to burn a lot more gas helping drive gas prices even higher. We need to put in more generating capacity for when the wind does not blow which does not rely on gas or coal.6:26 am · 23 Dec 2021·Twitter Web App

Key Points

Investors reacted to a study out of South Africa suggesting a reduced risk of hospitalization and severe disease with omicron compared to delta.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized an antiviral Covid pill from Pfizer for people aged 12 and above at risk of severe illness.

LONDON — European stocks are set to open slightly higher Thursday as traders looked to signs that the omicron Covid-19 variant is not as severe as previously feared.

Britain’s FTSE 100 is seen climbing 27 points to 7,347, Germany’s DAX rising 51 points to 15,617 and the French CAC up 30 points at 7,068, according to data from IG.

An unprecedented surge in wholesale gas and power prices is creating a national crisis, energy companies have warned.Good Energy, EDF and trade body Energy UK have all stepped up the pressure on the Government to intervene after a "stratospheric" jump in prices.Nigel Pocklington, chief executive of London-listed Good Energy, said "This is a national crisis. Wholesale gas and power prices have increased to unprecedented levels over the last three weeks, creating an extremely difficult operating environment for every business in the industry."It comes after UK and European natural gas prices hit an all-time record high on Tuesday amid fears of a winter supply squeeze..... Omicron Has 80% Lower Risk of Hospitalization, New Study ShowsBy Janice Kew22 December 2021, 11:31 GMTOnce admitted, risk of severe disease is the same: NICD dataCompared to delta, odds of severe omicron disease is 70% lowerSouth Africans contracting Covid-19 in the current fourth wave of infections are 80% less likely to be hospitalized if they catch the omicron variant, compared with other strains, according to a study released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.Once admitted to the hospital, the risk of severe disease doesn’t differ from other variants, the authors led by scientists Nicole Walter and Cheryl Cohen said.Compared to delta infections in South Africa between April and November, omicron infections are associated with a 70% lower risk of severe disease, they said. The omicron data was collected for the two months through November.Since being identified by South African scientists on Nov. 25, the omicron variant has fueled record case numbers across the country. Africa’s most developed economy has fully inoculated about 44% of its adult population over a seven-month period. In the data that are being submitted to a preprint medical publication -- MedRxiv -- the authors adjusted for various confounding factors that could influence the results, including age, gender and whether the cases were known reinfections. For severity of disease after admission, they also adjusted for the presence of other illnesses and prior immunisation. The study also showed that those with omicron may have higher viral loads. The study is “important,â€? though its use of so-called historic controls when comparing to the delta infections between April and November means its outcome may be biased by time issues, said Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the U.K.’s University of East Anglia.“So even though cases of omicron were less likely to end up in hospital than cases of delta, it is not possible to say whether this is due to inherent differences in virulence or whether this is due to higher population immunity in November compared to earlier in the year,â€? Hunter said. The authors flagged the same limitations.spud

Gas prices in the UK and Europe have surged to fresh record highs after fears of a winter supply squeeze returned. As colder temperatures set in and flows from Russia to the Continent dropped, the UK gas price rocketed to a new high of 470p per therm on Tuesday - more than the previous record of 407p reached in October. At the same time, EU natural gas prices also hit a record, prompting France to fire up plants with heavy fuel oil, which is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels, to ease the strain on its power grid. The price of buying electricity in France in February surged to €1,000 per megawatt hour, suggesting investors fear the situation will worsen over the winter months.Meanwhile, forward prices for 2022 and winter 2022-23 have also rocketed as traders bet that the crisis could drag on for years.Analysts at Investec warned that the surge in prices would almost certainly lead to higher energy bills for millions of British households, as well as the potential collapse of more suppliers..... European markets set for muted open as investors monitor omicron risk

Key Points

Global markets have endured a volatile week thus far, and European shares rebounded 1.4% on Tuesday to retrace much of the loss accrued during a sharp sell-off in the previous session.

Investors are juggling the rapid spread of the omicron variant, and the introduction of containment measures by governments around the world, with new scientific analysis of its severity and pharmaceutical developments on booster shots and treatments.

LONDON — European markets are set for a tepid open Wednesday as investors continue to monitor the threat posed by the omicron Covid-19 variant.

Britain’s FTSE 100 is seen around 9 points higher at 7,306, Germany’s DAX is set to add around 36 points to 15,483 and France’s CAC 40 is expected to climb around 19 points to 6,984, according to IG data.

Markets in Asia-Pacific were modestly higher on Wednesday while U.S. stock futures were muted in early premarket trade following the Dow’s 500-point rebound on Tuesday.
