UBS Group AG is asking the Swiss government for a backstop if it were to buy Credit Suisse Group AG, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

UBS is discussing scenarios in which the government would take on certain legal costs or other specific losses in any deal, said the people, asking not to be identified describing private discussions. The largest Swiss bank is exploring an acquisition of all or parts of its smaller rival at the urging of regulators to halt a crisis of confidence

The Swiss Franc is caught in a vortex between a banking crisis and a risk-off event as markets are asking questions of what the ramifications of the failure of three US banks will be.

Credit Suisse has been bailed out by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) today. They will provide up to CHF 50 billion of liquidity to the embattled investment bank and Credit Suisse will buy CHF 3 billion of their own debt.

Going into today, Credit Suisse’s 1-year credit default swaps, (CDS) the cost of insuring the banks’ debt, went from under 5% to 37%. The share price remains well below CHF 2. The high above CHF 80 in 2007 is but a distant memory.

The Franc is often seen as a haven in times of uncertainty, but currency traders are conflicted with a Swiss bank in the centre of the current crisis of confidence.

The emerging banking woes are less than a week old but the path ahead for rates has pivoted dramatically. The terminal rate for the Federal Reserve is now around 4.85%, a long way from over 5.90% seen last week.

Swiss National Bank to provide Credit Suisse with liquidity if needed


Switzerland's central bank issued a public statement of support for Credit Suisse and said they would provide liquidity if needed.

In a statement, the monetary authority said: "The Swiss National Bank SNB and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA assert that the problems of certain banks in the USA do not pose a direct risk of contagion for the Swiss financial markets.

"The strict capital and liquidity requirements applicable to Swiss financial institutions ensure their stability.

"Credit Suisse meets the capital and liquidity requirements imposed on systemically important banks.

"If necessary, the SNB will provide CS with liquidity."

Switzerland's Franc had been an underperformer in midweek trade after global markets worked themselves into a frenzy when a speculative run on the shares of Credit Suisse led to a rout in the broader European banking sector entailing double-digit percentage losses for shares of some names.

But Swiss exchange rates steadied late in the North American session on Wednesday after the Swiss National Bank (SNB) said in a statement that it would support Credit Suisse through the provision of liquidity if such action becomes necessary for any reason at all.

"The problems of certain banks in the USA do not pose a direct risk of contagion for the Swiss financial markets. The strict capital and liquidity requirements applicable to Swiss financial institutions ensure their stability," it said.

"Credit Suisse meets the capital and liquidity requirements imposed on systemically important banks. If necessary, the SNB will provide CS with liquidity," the SNB added in a statement made jointly with the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
