In the two years after autumn 2021,SMT fell approaching 60% and while the stock has done some catching up since,it has still significantly underperformed ATT and PCT in recent years. The unfortunate decision to dive headfirst into Moderna (at one point the funds largest holding at ten per cent) was responsible for a good proportion of the relative underperformance. However, the price collapse means Moderna is pretty immaterial to SMTs performance now,hey it might even recover. |
Agree bought smt and ATt at the same time in 2022. Today ATt up 36% smt down 15%. Smt has recovered a lot from where they were but still need to go before I get my money back. |
I would say performance depends on when you bought it - I added some 3 years ago and it's just breaking even. Probably why it's trading at a discount.I think it's positioned to do well in the long term. |
SMT now top of its sector over 1,5 and 10 years. And still on a discount of 8%. |
For second month running, ScoMo secures number 1 position in ii's monthly rankings of Top Ten Most Popular Investment Trusts - for January. |
I have mentioned Palantir repeatedly.
Last night , Palantir posted such strong earnings results that shares soared 25% in extended trading. Shares skyrocketed from c. $80 to $102
This is the headline of their Q4 and FY earnings report:-
"Palantir Reports Q4 2024 Revenue Growth of 36% Y/Y, U.S. Revenue Growth of 52% Y/Y; Issues FY 2025 Revenue Guidance of 31% Y/Y Growth, Eviscerating Consensus Estimates"
Those growth figures are eye-watering.
One of many reports:-

It is interesting to compare the share price performance of Palantir with Snowflake (a ScoMo portfolio investment) which both IPO'd at an identical time in September 2020.
The market does not yet fully understand, grasp and appreciate the central role which Palantir increasingly plays and increasingly dominates in the Artificial Intelligence landscape for corporations and governments.

Thanks for another buying opportunity, Mr Trump. Might be a bit longer lasting than the last one though... |
You believe there's stamp duty on sales. You should stay away from the stock market. Try tiddlywinks instead. |
It is interesting to compare the market valuations of the major chip designers/fabricators
Market Capitalisations - rough figures
Nvidia $3 trillion Taiwan Semi $1.1 trillion Broadcom $1 trillion Qualcomm $194 billion AMD $193 billion Arm Holdings $170 billion Intel $86 Billion

No stamp duty on Sales. |

@ markth "I’ve downloaded Deepseek on my dog." ??
What's a dog? |
elbrus55 - fair enough & well done! A profit's a profit at the end of the day.
Your idea of a bubble is others' view of an undervalued opportunity. After all, SMT's still trading at an 8-9% NAV discount. Though as Deepseek showed, it doesn't take much for markets to revalue. And next time, that devaluation might be more permanent.
Personally, having been here since 2016, I'll be selling a small part of my non-ISA holding by 5 April, simply to use up this year's CGT allowance. But I'm happy to let the rest run for now. As little as I respect the US President, I sense his light touch regulation will boost the sectors where SMT's most heavily concentrated.
Guess we'll see who's right soon enough! |
Bought SMT at 640p about 2 years ago and sold today at 1070p.It is always hard to get the timing right, but at the moment the valuation seems nuts and I'm happy to suffer the 0.5% UK stamp tax to get out of this bubble.. |
ASML reports significantly better than expected Q4 sales this morning and smashes stock analyst estimates.
The ASML share price has surged + 11% this morning.
Should set a very firm tone for the Tech market today and establish a healthy back-drop to the forthcoming Mag7 earnings season.
It appears that the ASML CEO thinks that cheaper AI is very beneficial for the industry.
From CNBC
"ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet struck a positive note on the arrival of low-cost AI models such as DeepSeek, telling CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal that he expects this development to drive more demand for semiconductors — not less."

I know they've tried to explain it by saying they used older, slower chip technology but it is still extremely surprising that tech into which the US companies have poured $billions has been developed by a Chinese start-up for less than $10 million. One naturally tends to be suspicious of anything coming out of China (and probably vice versa!) but something smells odd and warrants further investigation. |
be interesting to hear what ScoMo's take on DeepSeek is. |
I've downloaded Deepseek on my dog. It is very fast and works extremely well. The interface could use some tidying up but the back end is great, answered all of my tough questions and completed all my assignments much more thoroughly than the two other mainstream AIs. Based on that one day quick evaluation it looks like a winner. Expect the usual FUD from Silicon Valley about security, Chinese State Spying, world domination etc. but the fact that it's open source makes it OK with me. You just have to be cautious about its training..... |
Hopefully, that’;ll be the case and a number of tech magnets were arguing that yesterday.Nonetheless,i suspect that the sharp falls in stocks yesterday will have focused attention on the fact that tech stocks have been very strong especially since Trump got elected which might encourage funds to diversify, top slice some of their heavier tech holdings over the coming months. We’ll see. |
but the winners' podium will get much bigger as more users and companies will be able to adopt and build AI sooner at much reduced cost.
when things get cheaper - normally massively increasing demand outstrips margin erosion. |
Its a wake up call, that the area of A1 development will be highly competitive and there’s only so many places on the winners podium.Recently, the drug companies Novo,Eli Lily etc fell on concerns that the market for weight loss drugs was becoming increasingly congested and that competition would compromise margins.
ATT and PCT are the obvious trusts that could suffer as froth is blown off valuations applied to Nvidia,Broadcom etc but SMT has a broader and more esoteric, adventurous portfolio plus of course a plethora of private company holdings one doesn't know much about. Whether the market decides to differentiate between the various tech orientated trusts remains to be seen. |
The disrupters have been disrupted, at least for today. Even if DeepSeek turns out to be too good to be true (which is likely) it is a reminder that tech companies are no longer competing against old economy companies they are competing against each other and there will be some big, sudden, surprising losers. |
The Chinese AI app, DeepSeek is putting the willies up the US tech giants. It may be a flash in the pan or it may be the Chinese overtaking the US tech dominance. It may also be a buying opportunity. SMT isn't all AI and Tesla... |
Kick in the pants for tech stocks today! |
