shano2 - quite. It was years ago, but they seem to have divested since.

There again, que passa is fond of posting stuff on SMT's board which has no direct relevance to the fund.

steeplejack - I don't think SMT's managers will be unduly bothered about alternative investment trusts being in a better place right now.

That said, they might if the trend continued for, say, a decade. Indeed, they'd be daft not to by then, as the fund would be unlikely to attract many new takers.

But I'm reasonably relaxed things will look very different again (for the better) on that sort of timescale.

Good points takeiteasy. We all know that the first difficult rule of investment is getting to grips with the thorny issue of cutting your losses.Arguably, whilst heavily concentrated, the SMT portfolio is too long, too many holdings but maybe i'm eyeing the Alliance Technology fund that is in enviably good shape currently with no significant China exposure.Whilst every fund has "duff" holdings (who doesn't) the aggressive pursuit of Moderna to become SMTs flagship holding was a big mistake. The timing was poor and no amount of banging on about the long term prospects will alter the fact.SMTs problem from a marketing prospective,is that a number of alternative investment trusts are palpably in a better place right now.

There are going to be some duff-looking holdings in ANY fund. Particularly if you focus on the last 1-3 years, when a fund is designed as a 5 year+ hold.

I'm not saying all holdings will come good in SMT's case. I'm sure they won't. But to focus exclusively on tech picks would introduce even greater risk & volatility, as tech stocks are generally notoriously cyclical.

Sure, Meta is on a roll right now. But that change in sentiment's really only come about in the past 15 months. And it could be snuffed out equally quickly again if US, UK & EU regulators really got their claws into Meta & other social media platforms. Less likely perhaps in the US right now. But inevitable-looking in the UK & Europe. And not a moment too soon IMHO.

It is not fair to put Affirm in that list after it's performance in q4. But I basically agree. SMT is some great US listed tech, some China stocks which carry huge jurisdictional risk, a load of biotech and Tesla, which is a play on Elon Musks attention span. China risk is so extreme it should be parked in a specialist China fund. Ditto biotech. The tech picks are great but are being sunk by the rest of the portfolio

SMT managers for some reason just will not let go of certain stocks that lose money over 1,3 and in cases 5 years. There is a much higher number in this portfolio that I can see in many of their rivals.

I keep asking the same question as to why they will not clear up the poor performers and replace them with high performers like Meta that is making money - a 1% holding for Meta seems a rather odd decision in this context.

You end up simply throwing away all the good work from all the trophy holdings that are making the fund serious money. It seems such a basic mistake to allow to continue imvho and no one can ever explain why they see the numbers somehow differently.

YTD 2024 only
Nio ADR -39&, Delivery hero -34%, Tesla -24%, Ginkgo - 24%, Meituan -22%, Affirm -16% etc etc

3 of these holdings now down over 80% over 3 years.

SMT still being pushed in the Telegraph again - it is really quite extraordinary.

How is this struggling to rise?

Some of its biggest holdings having the rise of their lifetime, yet this is still up/down/up/down

What will it take for this to rise?

I do encourage people to read to the end and then make their mind up because the title could leave you in a different frame of mind, until you read some of the 'better bits', indeed as would a quick glance.

Their conclusion.

'We believe this means share price performance will improve and could repeat the benchmark-beating return of the past decade’s 318.9% versus 193.2%.'

From my point of view I still have only a starter position until things be clearer but I do have a lot of respect for SMT both in their choices due to their expertise and for a rarer shun of the short termism shown elsewhere.

Purely my own thoughts of course.
