(£5m headroom on debt vs. annual fixed op costs [need to run the calc but guess for now] of max £10m - ability to furlough, cut costs etc. And that assumes all businesses are shutdown which looks highly unreasonable at this stage. Lots of products into the scientific world.

If a small listed business like SDI goes bankrupt or needs major refinancing that wipes out equity holders, then think it's fair to assume the economy is dead and we're in a depression. And if we were to get closer to that point, easy credit probably becomes easier first

Judges Scientific is down about 29% from its peak ( £ 60 down to £ 42.50 ) . SDI , in contrast , is down 55% from its peak ( 90p to 40p ) . Obviously Judges is much bigger . Also , as has been stated here before , there’s a higher proportion
Of private investors in SDI than in Judges . One concern which I have concerning SDI is that , after the recent acquisition of Chells , has this left SDI short of cash reserves to see them through this “ difficult “ ( ! ) time ? Answers would be appreciated .

Maybe; hard to say. The market is definitely treating SDI as being clearly heavily impacted, and I'd be very surprised at the group level if that wasn't true on a 2-3 month view - very few companies at all will see no material impact. The good news I guess is that this disruption in to an extent priced in. FY20 results should be fine (maybe a bit short of estimates given the March and April disruption?). But still a lot of growth coming through from M&A already done unless the entire economic wheels fall off

Thanks for that info. Would be nice to see a larger director holding, any buying now would possibly convince me to buy back in. Possible trading update this week?

A reason to be cheerful ! On 9th March , according to the RNS , Tellworth declared a holding of 5.17% of SDI . Together with other shareholders owning more than 3% ( the threshold at which holdings have to be declared ) , that means that 50.32% of SDI is held by holders of more than 3% each . In addition , directors hold 1.99% ( not so impressive , I agree ) . That means that at least ( there could be large holders of less than 3% ) 52.31% is held by organisations and directors . Thus , with a total market cap of £ 42.9 M , the value of remaining shares on the open market is £ 20.45 M . Such a small free float will tend to accentuate share price movements , both up and down ( ! ) in my humble opinion .

2toptrader . Thanks for the clarification . Your views on the market are similar to
mine . As you seem to imply , although the period of mass panic selling is ( hopefully ! ) behind us , we should not presume that this is the bottom ( for markets in general ) .

Helpfully pointed out on twitter by @Rhomboid1mf; an update from Atik Cameras today, below which makes for interesting reading (particularly around the working at capacity part).

Hello,

I would like to share with you the way in which Atik are responding to the current situation.

Last week we posted the above video showing the new production facility we have in Lisbon, Portugal. Rui Tripa (our production manager) mentions during his tour that we make cameras to go into equipment that are used in Labs and Hospitals. In fact every day 1000’s of virus tests are completed round the world using equipment with Atik cameras inside. This is something we are immensely proud of. Demand for new equipment has of course increase and we are currently prioritising production for our customers in research or diagnostic applications and are working at capacity. Rui and his team have done a fantastic job to put equipment and procedures in place to allow this production to continue within guidelines.

In our UK offices we have most people working from home with a skeleton staff keeping the core of our business functioning. Indeed it’s so strange to see a normally packed building so quiet.

Of course this has some knock on effects for our astronomers. We have had to stop our development and production of the upcoming CosMOS camera as we just don’t have the capacity to bring a new product to market at the moment. Better news is that we still have high levels of stocks of our existing range including the Horizon II, Atik 460ex, and Atik One cameras.

Astronomy and astroimaging are one of the hobbies that can still be enjoyed with the current restrictions. Not being able to travel to dark skies need not be an issue, rather a reason to try narrow band imaging. We do have a full range of filters available for use with our cameras. Vince, Andrew and myself will keep monitoring our forum, emails and social media channels so please stay in touch. Also Chris is working on a significant update to our Dusk software and Amy plans to have the Atik imaging competition open shortly.

It’s a difficult time but one in which is important to look to the positives. Stay safe, appreciate the skies, and enjoy life.

Steve Chambers, Managing Director

ps I'm more of a trader to be honest but if I was a long term investor I would definitely start scaling in slowly at these levels BUT in solid, good companies. Like SDI but slowly, on bad days. fwiw

mrnumpty - I do think the bottom is in or at least in the process of bottoming out. Same goes for many other shares and markets in general.I think we've gone past the capitulation stage and although it's very likely markets in general will test the lows I think a gradual recovery is the most likely scenario. that's what my crystal ball is saying.

Very likely the bottom is in.Typical investor behaviour: at first they don't believe it, then they fight it, then finally end up buying at the top just like they sold at the bottom. Oh dear , oh dear.

Have I missed something?
The conditions have been set out in words but I see no figures?

In particular : - "performance condition for the awards is linked to the Company's growth measured in EPS and total shareholder return."
How much eps growth?

"The awards are further subject to claw back and malus provisions."
Such as.....?

"a holding period to be determined by the Remuneration Committee."
& how long is a piece of string?

"nil paid awards", notwithstandig the give-away "price" are a contract.
Without figures or definition, it's a contract I would not accept.

IMO there will be a buying opportunity, but not before the US & Trump have choked on their money and the innadequacy of their health system, which IMHO will soon produce another fall in the markets.
C 19 pandemic/pandemonium won't be beaten until a cure is found. Current measures are all we can do for now, and are the right action, but the CURE/VACINE is the solution to the problem.
Further to that we need a WORLD HEALTH AUTHORITY to ensure health and hygene standards that will avoid such disasters in the future. Without that, globalisation remains a big risk...

Plenty of volume - looks like the dam has broken. 170,000 shares just bought at 42.5p, and also just now 20,000 shares at 44p - a full 1p above the 43p published offer price.
