11/10/2007 11:07 | Schroders provided the session's speculative focus. In above-average trading volumes, shares in the fund management group jumped 5.7 per cent to a seven-year high of £15. There were several explanations, according to traders. One was that Schroders might sell its investment arm to focus on private banking, another that Schroders might look to sell several of its lower-margin businesses such as fixed income. However, market professionals believed the rise owed more to buying from US institutions. Harris Associates, the activist US fund, is one of Schroders' biggest shareholders with a 9 per cent stake. They also pointed out that plans for a flat rate of capital gains tax (18 per cent) could tempt the Schroders family to sell some of its holding. | mr roper | |
