07/12/2015 07:36 | A lot of speculation this weekend that gov't will offer subsidies for satellite broadband to rural communities, confirmed by RNS from Avanti this morning... "Avanti Communications Group plc announces a new contract with BT, to be part of BT's supply of wholesale consumer broadband services which will be sold onwards to consumers in the UK through a network of satellite resellers under the auspices of the British Government's Universal Service Commitment." Would hope that SAT would be in prime position to be part of the "network of satellite resellers" :) hxxp://news.sky.com/ "On Sunday, Ed Vaizey, the digital economy minister, confirmed the scheme's rollout to 300,000 homes, each of which will be able to claim up to £350 towards the cost of satellite installation and a year's subscription. "Our rollout of superfast broadband has already reached an additional 3.5 million homes and businesses who would otherwise have missed out," he said. "This scheme offers immediate assistance to those homes and businesses in the most remote areas with the slowest speeds and is all part of our transformation of the UK's digital landscape." The plans are being overseen by Broadband Delivery UK and will be available to homes which cannot access greater than 2Mbps from terrestrial networks. Homeowners who join the scheme will then pay roughly £25 each month in service charges, a source said. Ministers privately estimate that roughly one-third of the 300,000 eligible homes would be likely to take up the offer." | iainbarclay
22/11/2015 18:52 | Telephone wires in the countryside are vulnerable to storms as I have found to my cost. BT's delay of over a month in replacing my wire caused me to sign up for this satellite service two years ago and last week's storm made me all the more thankful that I did. It was admittedly my own falling tree that brought the line to my house down but I was rather shocked to learn that this will not be replaced until the 30th and on past form I may not get the line back then; I am not sure that I really want it. So no matter how good BT's connection may be, it will in windy areas remain subject to the weather unless they bury their wires. This would be ruinously expensive and is unlikely to happen. So there should remain a good market for satellite connections in the countryside for many years to come. | varies
22/11/2015 16:34 | "Fast broadband for all by 2020 pledged by David Cameron 7 November 2015 From the section UK All UK homes and businesses will have access to "fast broadband" by 2020, David Cameron has pledged. The PM is to introduce a "universal service obligation" for broadband, giving the public a legal right to request an "affordable" connection. It would put broadband on a similar footing to other basic services such as water and electricity. Labour said it meant "another five years on the broadband back-burner" for those struggling with their service. In 2010, the coalition government promised the UK would have the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015. Then, in 2012, a pledge was made by then-Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt that the UK would have "the fastest broadband of any major European country" by 2015. He defined high-speed broadband as offering a download speed of greater than 24 megabits per second (Mbps). Communications regulator Ofcom defines it as 30Mbps. 'Fundamental right' Mr Cameron's latest announcement is aimed at ensuring consumers have access to a broadband connection with a speed of at least 10Mbps, no matter where in the country they live or work. "Access to the internet shouldn't be a luxury, it should be a right - absolutely fundamental to life in 21st Century Britain," he said. Mr Cameron, who is expected to set out further details next week, added: "Just as our forebears effectively brought gas, electricity and water to all, we're going to bring fast broadband to every home and business that wants it. "We're getting Britain - all of Britain - online, and on the way to becoming the most prosperous economy in the whole of Europe." Officials said that more than 83% of homes and businesses in Britain currently have access to a superfast broadband connection - 24Mbps - with that number set to rise to 95% by 2017. Culture Minister Ed Vaizey told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We want to upgrade the universal service obligation to provide fast broadband speeds of 10Mbps for the very hardest to reach homes and businesses. Those at the end of the line, the last 5% that we are desperate to get to. "So we're putting in place this regulation, that we're going to consult on at the beginning of next year, to make sure that if you're in that last 5%, you can demand, and you'll get it." Chi Onwurah, shadow minister for culture and the digital economy, said the government needed to set out how the new pledge would be funded and when consumers would "actually see the benefits". "Five years after abandoning Labour's fully-funded commitment to universal broadband, the government's "superfast" broadband rollout is still being hit with delays and at the mercy of a single provider," she said. Record criticised The government has already given BT £1bn to extend broadband to some rural areas, although its record has been criticised, BBC reporter Rob Young says. It is unclear whether more taxpayers' money will be available for this latest ambition, he adds. BT says faster universal broadband needs to be "commercially viable". Virgin Media has argued against state subsidies. In a statement Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media chief executive said: "Government should roll back the red tape we already have today. Help us connect more premises more quickly by giving us the same fast-track access rights as water and gas companies." In September, BT hit back at rivals calling for its break-up, as it announced a strategy to make the UK the fastest broadband nation. It revealed plans to connect 10 million homes to ultrafast broadband (300-500Mbps) by the end of 2020 and raise the minimum broadband speed for homes that cannot get fibre to 5-10Mbps." | hedgehog 100

17/8/2015 19:06 | henryatkin My experience of Tooway has been very satisfactory, unlike yours, and I have recently bought some SAT shares. I live in Shropshire some 4 miles from the nearest BT exchange and had to wait about a month last year for the telephone line to be restored. So I got myself connected to Tooway as an act of desperation. I believe that it cost me about £250 for the dish and connection fee and I pay a subscription of £30 per month. This is expensive but I need it. If a WiMax radio connection was available, I could not find it. I expect that my £360 p.a. will go straight through into SAT's profits with very little expense set against it once they have enough subscriptions to cover the satellite charges. If there were 20,000 tame customers paying the same rate, this would make £7.2m p.a. This looks a good business proposition to me and I am reminded of the steady income for doing very little the TV rental companies used to enjoy. | varies
17/8/2015 10:26 | Executing nicely on the plan here, write-up in Telegraph today... | hausofmaus
14/5/2015 09:32 | I experienced Eurosat Tooway a few years ago and it was a fairly rubbish for the money. The speed was just about acceptable but performance was unreliable and cost was high. I dumped it as soon as my two year contract expired. There are much better & cheaper WiMax radio transmitted operators out there as used on the railways and community radio broadband such as Vfast apart from the competition from AVN who incidentally have never made a profit. I'm out. | henryatkin
