Looks like Santander have commenced in market repurchases imo.

There were 200,000,000 of these in issue issued in 2 lots 1996/97 hxxp://www.santander.co.uk/uk/about-santander-uk/investor-relations/capital-issuances

But there are 136,000,000 left after a previous tender when they were listed as ANLA

Moody’s have stated recently : - Santander UK plc LT Deposit Rating placed on Rating under Review (‘RuR up’). Preliminary indication suggests a possible upgrade to A1

Indeed, it would certainly take towards the upper end of the range rather than the lower one before getting my holdings.

From Santander's website:

'Santander UK plc does not have any rights to redeem the preference shares but it does have the authority by way of shareholders' resolution to repurchase them...'

So presumably if they are to succeed in their proposal you would think the offer would have to be towards the upper end of the range they mention.

Hmm. Reading that I'm not sure how this will work out...? Will we be offered the median, ie a buyout at or around the current price?

The share price is certainly reacting positively to the news.

Well that looks fair to me, so they are asking for authority to take out 200 Million at a premium of up to 125% of the market price.

So that would be £1.92 pence for the SAN's

....of course both these sums could be higher than that in reality when resolution passed (would not be surprised to see yields on these drop to 5% myself).

Welcome, probably one of the easiest sleep safely income stocks with such a juicy yield available today. When one looks at other options, and even say BP.A this is clearly very good value.

Strangely neither transaction seemed to be recorded as buys or sells.

Banco Santander SA (SAN), Spain's biggest-bank, said second-quarter profit rose 38 percent, beating analyst estimates, helped by the U.K. and a recovery in its home market.

Net income rose to 1.45 billion euros ($1.94 billion) from 1.05 billion euros a year earlier, the Santander, Spain-based lender said in a filing to regulators today. Earnings compared with the 1.36 billion-euro average estimate in a Bloomberg survey of 13 analysts.

The bank's U.K. unit, run by Chairman Emilio Botin's daughter, Ana Patricia Botin, is setting the pace for earnings growth at Santander, while Spain is emerging from its economic slump. After the bank took bad-loan provisions and writedowns of more than 65 billion euros over the past five years, Chairman Botin told shareholders in March that Spain would be one of its "most positive stories" over the next three years, helping the bank boost earnings toward pre-crisis levels of 9 billion euros.

"The momentum from the U.K. has been pretty strong, and the expectation is this will continue," said Benjie Creelan-Sandford, a bank analyst at Macquarie Bank Ltd. in London. "Things are definitely getting better for Santander in Spain, but the extent of the recovery shouldn't be overstated."

Thanks for highlighting that.

A company that manages to turn its performance around for the better and has its credit rating upgraded will generally have a substantial price appreciation. It is all moving in the right direction.

Clicked on link but I read that as preference shares now 'BB', still junk, though upgraded from BB-. Where did the BBB+ come from?

Having moved toward upper medium grade debt, some way to go I think.

As a just for fun stat, long dated BBB+ rated 30 year munis have yield circa 4% in the US.
