(SVC/TSX) was up more than 10% Wednesday morning after the company announced new and improved guidance figures for it fiscal 2007 revenues. The company now expects sales to reach between $62-million and $67-million in 2007, versus their previous forecast of $50-million to $60-million, according to a release. The Waterloo-based provider of intelligent broadband network solutions for DSL, FTTH, cable and wireless carriers said the increase estimate is due to strong business from existing and new customers, including another "tier 1 broadband service provider, with over 2 million broadband subscribers." Scotia Capital analyst Gus Papageorgiou said he believes the new customer is U.S.-based Charter Cablevision | andrbea

29/5/2007 09:11 | surge in network traffic May 16 The decision to stream HD content from its web site could present a new set of bandwidth issues... not to ABC, but to its users. Recent data has shown that the use of media-heavy services, such as the iTunes Store and Xbox Live, has caused network traffic to surge as the services become more and more popular. The CEO of broadband equipment company Sandvine, Dave Caputo, even warned service providers in December: "Service providers need to identify these trends early in order to proactively ensure there is adequate capacity to support the extra bandwidth usage. Their networks must be equipped to protect this increasingly valuable traffic from the effects of a best-effort network." Unfortunately, some broadband providers have cracked down on customers for using too much bandwidth even if the providers have not stated a specific limit. ABC is surely not going to be the only TV network to start experimenting with streaming HD content in the future, and some viewers will probably be attracted to the new distribution format-will broadband providers be able to keep up with the trends of its users? | andrbea
11/5/2007 15:00 | growth in the DPI market The DPI market is expected to more than double from $125 million in 2007 to $300 million in 2008, according an unreleased Yankee Group report. "The main driver is the general growth in IP traffic," said David Vorhaus, an analyst with Yankee Group, and the author of the report. "Carriers are looking for a deeper level of detail as to what exactly people are doing on the network, where they are going, what apps they are using, etc." Ellacoya is one of at least four companies that offer DPI switches and/or software. Sandvine of Waterloo, Ontario, and Allot of Israel both went public in 2006, while startup Narus, of Mountain View, California, has taken in more than $100 million in funding. Network equipment giant Cisco Systems is also a top contender for the DPI market. | andrbea
