Sainsbury’s can clear its hurdles, says Shore Capital

Sainsbury’s (SBRY) is facing tough comparatives this year, on top of supply chain problems related to Argos, but it should deliver ‘in-line’ trading, says Shore Capital.

Analyst Clive Black retained his ‘buy’ recommendation on the supermarket, which firmed 0.9%, or 2.4p, to 280p on Wednesday.

‘We sense that it will be within the pack from a grocery trading perspective compared to the other Big Four operators, noting that Asda will be benefiting from relatively easier comparatives; Sainsbury’s comparatives are very tough,’ he said

Black said alongside trying to top 2020’s strong sales, Sainsbury’s will also have to ‘manage the challenges at Argos where product availability has been an issue in 2021 as a result of supply chain and freight matters’.

He added: ‘To date, Sainsbury’s has spoken of Argos delivering a flat out-turn year-on-year so margin offsetting sales absences; we would expect Sainsbury’s clothing business Tu to be performing well.

‘All-in-all, we would expect Sainsbury’s to deliver in-line guidance in its third-quarter trading update.’

Telegraph's Questor 2021 review

Likewise, the opportunities from buying stocks that have had a relatively disappointing history, but which can capitalise on changing industry trends, are illustrated by our advice to buy Sainsbury’s.

We tipped the supermarket, which has struggled for years with no-frills rivals and price-conscious consumers, in March. Encouragingly, its online investment now appears to be bearing fruit. This has contributed to a 19.5pc share price rise and 10.6 percentage point outperformance of the FTSE 100 since our tip.

Moreover, its cost-cutting strategy, the development of home-related products and a switch towards digital avenues could pay off in future.

SBRY looking good chartwise today and looks like finishing on high for day which is unusual. More upside to come I reckon unless of course US markets suddenly tank which seems unlikely as the santa rally continues

spob,
I suspect that is because with Amazon delivery jobs you 'use your own vehicle and your smartphone to deliver parcels for Amazon'

spob, I think Tesco has a team of four weather men!

As to why the share price is dropping here in comparison to Tesco, no bid and a fist of 'shorts' in my humble.

SBRY keeps drifting very slowly down and no sign it will turn soon unless t/o rumours return. I am sorry I kept a small holding some time ago after selling most of them .
nice weekend all and I must learn to religiously do what chart is telling me to do ! ( wry smile ) .

Seems to me could cut the number shop floor staff by half, employ staff that are far more productive and actually who get on with the job they're paid to do, increase this new work force pay by 50% would still mean a saving of 25% on Sainsbury's overall shop floor staff bill.

lack of productivity

lidl pay more than both of them

so not surprised at all to be honest

what goes around comes around

These big companies have cut pay, pensions, contracts and every other minor petty little thing you can possibly think of, in order to pay the HUGE wage bill of the part of the business that eats money and contributes nothing to shareholders .... Grocery Online

I don't blame the grocery online workers, they are just doing their jobs, but the management of these big companies are going to look pretty stupid in years to come.

As I was driving past my local Tesco, I popped in to buy one of two things.

To my shock and absolute horror, overnight they had put in what looked like cattle carrel gates in front of each of the tills and the self service check out area.

Going into my local Tesco now I feel like I'm being treated like cattle, a cow or sheep and not like a human being.
