15/2/2003 00:34 | LONDON (AFX) AMEC PLC said Road Management Services, the consortium in which it has a 25 pct share, has finalised contracts with the Highways Agency to upgrade and operate a 33-mile section of the A1 in Yorkshire to motorway standard. The 33-year project has an investment value of around 245 mln stg. Total funding for the job, which covers the A1 between Darrington and Dishforth, is being secured through a 114 mln stg index-linked bond and a 110 mln facility from the European Investment Bank. The remainder is equity investment from the consortium shareholders. The new contract has been negotiated with Road Management Services (Darrington) Ltd, which is jointly owned by AMEC, Alfred McAlpine, Dragados and Kellogg Brown & Root. Construction work is due to start in April 2003, and the whole scheme is due for completion in Summer 2006. rn | maywillow

12/2/2003 12:28 | Whats laughable about the London congestionn scheme is the lack of improved alternatives. Singapore has special licenses to allow people to buy cars and congestion fees BUT it has a very good alternative transportation system. | bigt20
12/2/2003 12:13 | Good article Kingfish, bout time someone spoke up for the motorist! With a car I can theoretically go from any point A to any point B - something which public transport cannot do. There are lots of journeys from town to town that I can do in 30 mins or less which would take the whole day to do by public transport. Witha car I don't waste time waiting around on platfroms - surely the most annoying part of train journeys. Witha car I am in control - I don't have to face the very real risk Cancelled Trains or Delayed Trains. With a car I can travel quite late in the evening or even through the early hours - the equivalent trains usually stop serving at 11pm - thus limiting my evenings out quite drastically. The Car Poll Tax (ie congestion charge) sounds like yet another stealth tax imposed by the GOvt. As well as yet another restriction on the freedom of the individual, along with speed cameras, ID cards, fuel tax, restriction of info onthe Internet, Email monitoring (currently being resisted by most ISPs but its only a matter of time), mobile phone call monitoring etc etc etc................. | ebeing
11/2/2003 22:12 | As the British economy sags into the sort of recession that Gordon Brown told us would not happen again, a crude and clumsy socialist measure threatens to make it worse. While the rest of the world benefits from the freedom of an unrestricted global economy, the great city of London is about to impose a tax on movement. The Government`s transport experts are watching keenly to see if London Mayor Ken Livingstone gets away with this outrageous scheme. If he does, the whole country will soon be criss-crossed by electronic turnpikes, where local authorities will demand money in return for nothing. Tolls for good new roads might well be acceptable. But being charged to drive along the crumbling ,potholed streets for which we have already paid once is not.. | kingfish

02/2/2003 09:41 | It seems that British roads are in need of much up grading and maintenance. The question being addressed is how will it be financed. The Continental Toll System has been much talked about but few tangible acheivements to date.Toll Bridges being perhaps the exception. The British Road Infrastructure in coming years will no doubt again be greatly improved .Britain has much Toll experience which it is called upon from time to time. Which companies will get the contracts? ROAD TOLLS VAT and Politics INNER CITIES THE ENVIRONMENT with a little history and geography Others opinions | waldron |
