Moffat called upon the European Commission's antitrust authorities and
other relevant competition authorities to take note of the steep price rises as another reason to oppose the proposed production joint venture between BHP and Rio Tinto.
Both miners want to merge their mining operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, but said they would continue to run their marketing operations independently of each other and the joint venture.
Moffat urged regulators to oppose the joint venture on the grounds that it will
concentrate the top three miners' pricing power even further.

Futures contracts tied to the major U.S. stock indexes held steady in early morning trade on Tuesday as investors hoped to extend the S&P 500′s gains after the index returned to positive territory for the year during the regular session.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dipped 5 points, suggesting an opening decline of just around 31 points when regular trading resumes on Tuesday. S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures also pointed to a little changed Tuesday open.
