Futures contracts tied to the major U.S. stock indexes rose early Monday as investors weighed comments by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on the state of the economy against signs of optimism as states began to reopen for business over the weekend.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures implied an opening gain of more than 270 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also pointed to gains at the open.

Futures contracts tied to the major U.S. stock indexes rose in early Monday morning trade as investors pored over comments from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell on the state of the economy, in light of last week’s market losses.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 281 points, implying an opening gain of almost 194 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also rose and pointed to modest advances for the two indexes at Monday’s open.

Key Points

London’s FTSE is seen 90 points higher at 5,888, Germany’s DAX is seen 200 points higher at 10,649, France’s CAC 40 is seen 78 points higher at 4,350 and Italy’s FTSE MIB is seen 332 points higher at 17,017, according to IG.

Investors will be digesting comments from U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Sunday, about the prospects for the U.S. economy to recover in the medium term.

Inconvenient truths ???

Go to Waldrons daily iron ore graph and switch to 3 years - you'll find that the current iron ore price is way above the average for 2018 and has been all year. Average price of Rio in 2018 was probably only slightly less than it is currently.

Iron ore prices to fall (as a few analysts predict) - seems to contradict with iron ore futures (main quote September) being in excess of $90.

The rest of Rio is probably struggling but other metals are coming off their March lows - and copper especially seems worth watching.

China (to the extent you can believe the stats) seems to be back - and the health of the metal markets depends on China.

Seems to me there are worse places to have your money at the moment - we'll see.
