Hi hedgehog 100,

Many thanks for your comments. I think SRO and OVG both have wealthy Russians in charge who don't ever appear keen to do anything quickly so perhaps I will avoid that in the future. That said, they should have significant upside when something finally happens.
Will put Acorn on my watch list. Cheers

Although IDM (Inditherm) announced a RTO two days ago, its shares haven't been suspended as a result: that's because an admission document was published at the same time.

This goes back to a point that I made in my post 406 above:

Hedgehog 100 11 Oct'14 - 19:47 - 406 of 614 0 0 edit
"It's normal practice for a shell to be suspended for a RTO, though in theory it wouldn't necessarily have to be.
A RTO agreement must be announced to the market when it is signed, and an admission document published (as soon as possible afterwards).
The suspension occurs between the announcement of the deal, and the publication of the admission document.
So in theory, if an admission document is published at the same time as the deal is announced (which is when it is signed), (or equivalent information to it is available publicly), then the shares wouldn't have to be suspended. ... "

CHAL suspended today ahead of RTO of Starneth and investment in the New York Wheel..

"Starneth together with its respective subsidiaries and affiliates ("Starneth Group") form an engineering and manufacturing group specialized in the design and construction of Giant Observation Wheels and Structures."

Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Thanks Lazarus,

IDM hasn't been mentioned here previously.
It's not a shell, but today's news is a good reminder that RTOs can take place into non-shells too (and several potential candidates are included in this thread header).

Ovoca Gold (now 7p) shows that a share trading at under half cash can actually be a poisoned chalice:

" ... I feel that the ideal (as suggested by Tara7) should be to develop a 'mini portfolio' of such shares:
say ten, with around £1K. in each, depending upon an investor's circumstances."

Jimbob,

I like the fact that you have diversified between a number of shells, which is the sensible approach.

Some shells, if not most, are probably a bit of a gamble, but as long as the odds are right in relation to the potential upside, they can have a place in a diversified portfolio.

The same uncertainty applies to many other penny shares too of course, but it's often even more so with shells as they can be a bit of a 'lucky dip' ... you never know for sure what you're going to end up with after a deal (or even if there will ever actually be a deal!)

My other general comment is that with RTOs, acquisitions are usually made through the issue of just shares rather than any cash, so significant cash isn't a prerequisite.
Rather, the key currency is people.

I.e. insiders who have the contacts and muscle etc. to pull together a great deal ... and preferably also with the reputations to inspire excitement within the investment community.

Personally, I would prefer to pay above cash for a shell like ACO (Acorn Minerals), where there is a good chance of a deal within a reasonable timeframe, rather than a shell like SRO which has recently suggested (in March) that it will find it significantly challenging to cut a deal.

It pays to be on the look out for signs that something is brewing: TGL (technology play Touchstone Gold) for example has indicated by phone just this week (reported on LSE) that it expects to fulfil its investing policy by the end of June.

Hi,

I own several cash shells and generally prefer to buy those with which are reasonably clean and with decent cash backing that supports the bulk of the share price. It does mean I miss out on some of the speculative gains sometimes but helps to avoid horrible losses too.

If anyone is interested, my favourites at the moment are:

1) Spitfire Oil SRO May need (more !) patience but cash of over 9p and 3.7p to buy that means patience may well be rewarded.

2)Global Energy (GED), AT 35P, again cash is much higher, at 65p ish I believe.
Just a waiting game with the odds stacked in my favour

3)Hotel Corporation (HCP) At 1p, trading around cash held, clean shell, waiting for a reverse takeover

4)Hubco (ISDX) This is my outsider. Floated on ISDX at 10p a few years ago.
Can still buy for 10p although cash is about 7p now. Top shareholder list and Adam Reynolds in charge of finding a target. After his success with OPTI and NIPT I am prepared to pay a bit over cash.

Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

What is the news? – Quantum Computing OS Developed!
Cambridge Quantum Computing (CQCL) has developed a new operating system designed to run the futuristic quantum computers. The new OS is named t|kit> (yeah, you read it correctly). This development has been possible with the help of CQCL’s very own proprietary custom designed super-fast super computer and this made the imitating of the working of a quantum processor.

“CQCL is at the forefront of developing an operating system that will allow users to harness the joint power of classical super computers alongside quantum computers. The development of t|ket> is a major milestone,” company said in a statement. “Quantum computing will be a reality much earlier than originally anticipated. It will have profound and far-reaching effects on a vast number of aspects of our daily lives.”

What is the future of Quantum Computing and how does this OS affect it?

Cambridge Quantum Computing expects that now quantum computing will be a reality much earlier than expected. These days, the research in the quantum computing field is being done at a fast pace.

It should be noted that few days ago, IBM has made further progress with its simultaneous error detection to make a working quantum computer a reality in near future. CQC has said these developments could affect our lives in a larger way when quantum computing will be a reality.
