M&S’s first store installation was completed at Muswell Hill in 2010.
In March 2015 M&S completed the installation of the UK’s largest single roof mounted solar panel array on its East Midlands distribution centre in Castle Donington. It spans the site’s 900,000 sq ft roof and generates over 5,000 MWh of electricity per year, the equivalent amount of energy to power 1,190 houses.
Energy4All projects have raised over £50 million to construct and operate community-owned renewable energy generation at sites throughout the UK.

Prof. Phil Taylor

Biography

Professor Phil Taylor is Director of the Institute for Sustainability, Siemens Professor of Energy Systems and Leads the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI). He is an internationally leading researcher and industrial expert in energy systems, electrical distribution networks, smart grids and energy storage integration and control.

Electrical energy storage is central to the world’s energy future. It is vital to decarbonisation of the energy network, increases energy security and delivers energy user savings. Phil’s research team is leading large-scale energy storage demonstration projects throughout the UK.

He is a leading researcher on the Energy Storage for Low Carbon Grids project funded by the EPSRC that is working with multiple academic and industrial partners. The project aims to develop an integrated, cost-effective approach to deploying energy storage technology.

Phil and his research team are behind the smart grid lab in collaboration with Siemens, and energy storage test bed facility at NU. Both will be located at Science Central. NU researchers at these unique facilities are working with industry to pave the way for the UK’s future as an international leader in energy storage.　 　

Phil works regularly with energy suppliers and distributers in the UK on the use of energy storage for power quality improvement in distribution networks. He is an advisor to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in Malaysia regarding energy storage, Director of the EPSRC funded Multidisciplinary Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy and is overseeing the development of Science Central, Newcastle’s flagship project in urban sustainability.

The aim of the three year KTP project, is to develop a hybrid energy storage system to enable a redT Vanadium Redox Flow energy storage system, typically used for long duration, energy intensive, industrial applications, to be operated alongside a short duration, power intensive, energy storage technology such as lead acid, lithium battery or super capacitator. By combining different technologies, the hybrid system can utilise the individual energy and power strengths of these complimentary technologies and offer a full range of services to the grid.

On December 21st, Jabil was invited to attend a Stakeholder Event at the White House, celebrating the success of Manufacturing USA, a federal program bringing together leading U.S. innovators in manufacturing. Nearly 200 leaders from industry, academia and federal Institutes attended the event, with notable industry innovation leaders such as Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway) presenting to the group. Senior government officers from the White House, Department of Energy, the Department of Defense and the Department of Commerce were also in attendance.


Leading the Way to Innovation

The institute aims to develop manufacturing innovations in fields such as the digital thread, 3D printing, flexible hybrid electronics, functional fabrics, biopharmaceuticals and manufacturing of life saving cells, tissues and organs. Because many of these areas align very closely with Jabil's strategic capabilities and priorities, participation in the Manufacturing USA institutes strengthens its internal development efforts while enhancing Jabil's recognition as a global manufacturing innovation leader.
