11/12/2007 18:09 | Landline phones fading, but telcos still survive Posted Dec 11 2007, 07:12 AM by Kim Peterson Filed under: wireless, AT&T Rating: I ditched my landline telephone in June and don't miss it one bit. A federal study out yesterday shows that 14% of households in the U.S. are like mine -- with cell phones but no landline phones. (Read the study here.) Citigroup analyst Michael Rollins estimates that wireless-only households will rise to 27% by 2010, and cable VoIP penetration will reach 25% by then. So is there a future in telco stock? Rollins thinks the industry is safe, because consumer telephony provides only 22% of telco revenue. Telcos have had to be nimble in these changing times. For one thing, they're doing away with pay phones. AT&T is dumping the pay phones it operates in 13 states, and will exit the business completely by the end of next year. The company says there are 1 million pay phones still left in the U.S. The industry is also upping its investment in wireless phones and in high-speed Internet communications. Companies are moving quickly into international markets. So while the landline may become a thing of the past, don't write the obituary for the telephone companies just yet. | troys | |
