21/10/2024 12:20 | alphonse la grande was 25-1 or bigger and did indeed win, thrilling race | neilyb675
21/10/2024 12:16 | I actually looked up the results from those 'Tips' I think one came in at 33-1 but there was a stewards. Anyone know the outcome | jubberjim
21/10/2024 10:39 | So, you do have a sense of humour Neily ;-) This morning, about 8:40 I looked at my SIPP and was happy it was generally up on most shares compared to Friday. Now, not the case. The market has slumped in the past 90 minutes. Why? 7 full trading days before budget day. Will it be dire, worse than predicted? Or not quite as bad as expected/suggested and hence the market rebounds? We investors and the management of the companies we invest in deserve better political leaders - one's who appreciate business needs consistency and a clear road map. | mcunliffe1
21/10/2024 10:09 | OK, it IS from The Motley Fool...but...against that...it DOES actually feature Phoenix, so it will be a rarity for around here :-) One of my favourites A dividend-payer I like the chances of right now is insurance firm Phoenix Group (LSE: PHNX). It’s a big player in the UK insurance game, operating SunLife and Standard Life, among other subsidiaries. The UK’s ageing population presents a growing demand for retirement savings and income solutions, which could help boost its profits. But it’s not all plain sailing. If the economy hits rough waters again, increased claims and reduced investment returns could hurt the group’s financial performance. Not only that, the insurance industry is heavily legislated. Regulatory changes could impact Phoenix Group’s operations and profitability. | cwa1
21/10/2024 10:07 | i'd prefer more horse racing chatter on this thread in all honesty | neilyb675
21/10/2024 10:01 | Moderated. Its infested !!! | garycook
21/10/2024 10:00 | Don t know if that last comment was tongue in cheek, makes no odds but I too am finding it increasingly frustrating that the impending budget and elections are causing such a hiatus. Not long now until we will all be wallowing in the mire or engaging our brains. It is hard sometimes to just sit back and wait. Good luck everyone | jubberjim
21/10/2024 09:56 | nothing happens at the weekends on the stock market so a chat does no harm.. | lippy4
21/10/2024 09:29 | LOL, Spud, that was good of you to volunteer to set up a moderated thread for Phoenix :-)) | cwa1
21/10/2024 07:51 | Should be renamed the anything but PHNX GROUP [Unmoderated].spud | spud
21/10/2024 00:46 | Darn, thought I was on the PHNX BB! Must be mistaken folks. I will exit and search for it again. Sure I was right the first time though! 16th October 2024: Phoenix Group (LSE:PHNX) shares have proved an exceptional investment for dividend investors for more than a decade. Shareholder payouts have marched steadily higher in that time. And the yield on the FTSE 100 company has long beaten the index average of 3% to 4% during the period. | lauders
21/10/2024 00:35 | As I said, I think we should be thinking about today and tomorrow. I guess that's why the subject swiftly moved on to the Romans. Seems very relevant and perhaps the perfect moronic decorum for the thread. Lol. LOL !! | my retirement fund
20/10/2024 21:52 | Well, apart from medicine, irrigation, health, roads, cheese and education, baths and the Circus Maximus, what have the Romans ever done for us?https://genius.co | pete160
20/10/2024 20:15 | About 2000 miles of roads: Including Watling Street (the A2 and A5), Ermine Street (bits of the A10 and A15), Stane Street (A24, A29) and Fosse Way (A46). | kernelthread
20/10/2024 19:11 | Apart from the roads, writing and counting what did the Romans ever do for us…? | yump
20/10/2024 19:08 | Yes but invaders did give us gains For example when the Romans left Great Britain they gave us new way of writing and counting, they built us thousands and thousands miles of roads. They even gave us London the capital where some of our great institutions trade like Phoenix Insurance. | rado6700
20/10/2024 19:08 | The Immigration issue is looking in the wrong direction for the wrong reasons for our problems. Start with why people in our road won’t just go and clear leaves to stop the drains blocking, expecting the council to do it, which need to be every few days. So they’d rather live with the problem and moan than make a little effort. Again the immigration stats need breaking down and analysing, so that its not credible to moan generally about a problem that is multi-faceted. | yump
20/10/2024 17:27 | rado6700 i think you need to read more history about all the people who invaded this country over the centuries and left us with not many gains,we left behind a fair legal system railways all over their countries and in many cases united their warring peoples to become one. we are accused of many things but when you see the results of our being there in many countries we bettered the population especially with medicines and the result is the massive population growth and we see they cannot sustain it. | lippy4
20/10/2024 16:37 | I don't think morals based on the past are relevant. Good governance for today and tomorrow is far more important than worrying about what our long dead ancestors did. | my retirement fund
20/10/2024 15:45 | Your moral high ethics are on shaky ground .Hundreds of years ago we Brits and for that matter envious other Europeans sailed over in large boats to their countries or continents and decided to takeover everything, started the commonwealth whether the locals wanted or not.History is a wonderful thing .If everyone stayed put in their own space then we wouldn't have this pension fraud. | rado6700
20/10/2024 13:26 | We're not that good! | skinny
20/10/2024 09:33 | MRF: I love Dr Hosenfelder's accent and presentation style. I wonder what the ethnic breakdown of the 'supposed' supercentenarians might be? The connection with pension fraud implies the fraud is geared towards the extra money that is made when you hit 80. There are restrictions to receiving this, such as being in the qualifying territories for 10 out of the past 20 years (EU counts). I suspect this statistical 'blip' started to appear in Tower Hamlets about 40-50 years ago at just about the time the Bangladeshi community there started to increase, alongside the Somalian community. Arriving without paperwork, stating your age to be 70 and further, claiming to have spend the previous 10 years in various EU countries, will, on your 80th Birthday allow you to claim £85 a week - possibly more now. All without paying a penny in tax or pension contributions in this country. | mcunliffe1 |
