Architecture and natural beauty come together perfectly in Prague, particularly where the medieval stone arch of Charles Bridge spans the wide Vltava River. It’s been dubbed ‘the City of a Hundred Spires’, though it’s so chock-full of Gothic churches and towers that it surely must have more. One of the prettiest parts is the Old Town Square, with Baroque architecture and the intricate, animated Astronomical Clock.

The city’s ancient core is still in use, with Kirwan's Lane a fine example of the narrow medieval streets, all cobblestones and arches. The Claddagh, a fishing district with origins in the 5th century, lies to the west of the city with colourful fishermen’s cottages and glorious views across the water.

Though it’s beautiful in every season, Bergen really comes into its own as the days grow shorter and the snow piles up. Its richly coloured houses cling to the mountainsides, seeming to huddle together against the cold, reflecting perfectly in the clear waters of the North Sea. The Floibanen funicular winds its way up to Mount Floyen for sweeping views of the city. Bergen may be known as the gateway to the fjords, but there’s plenty of beauty to be found within the city too.

Life gravitates towards its natural waterway, Sydney Harbour, where the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House compete for attention. The neighbours are equally pretty, with cobbled shopping streets, Victorian arcades and a patchwork of parks. Topping it off are an embarrassment of beautiful beaches, from small coves around the sheltered harbour to iconic Bondi.

3-6 Priory Row (also known as Lychgate Cottages) is a row of timber-framed properties dating to around 1415. It is a remarkable survival of a pre-Dissolution building at the heart of Coventry’s high street area.

The building’s location and date indicate that it originally formed part of the precinct of the 12th-century St Mary’s Priory, and it is the only upstanding building which survives from the priory complex. It is a very good example of a timber-framed building of the early 15th century. It’s close-studded timbers and jettied floor show its status as a good quality medieval urban building. The principal timbers throughout show little evidence of re-use and demonstrate that the original structure survives well. Following tree ring dating research which showed its early date, the building has been recently upgraded to grade II* listed.

Records from the 16th and 17th centuries mention 3-6 Priory Row as cottages, but by the 19th century they were in poor condition and were acquired by the adjacent Blue Coat School in 1855 when they were restored and extended. The internal fireplaces and chimneys date from this time, as does the external stair and rear room to the east end.

The building has been underused for many years but is a much-loved part of the city centre.

With funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund, Coventry City Council and Coventry & Warwickshire LEP, Historic Coventry Trust has restored these buildings and renovated them as four luxury holiday cottages, for unique city centre stays. Find out more and book a stay.
