The deal puts BP at the heart of the boom in production from US shale rock that has upended global markets, putting the US on course to become a net oil exporter by 2025.Bernard Looney, head of BP upstream, said: 'It's a transformative deal. It gives us access to what we believe are some of the very best acreage and the very best basins. It takes us into the very heart of the most talked about oil play today.'The deal marks a major turning point for BP after years of retrenchment following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Some 11 people died when a rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, costing the company around £49billion.

Oil giant BP is splashing out £8billion on thousands of acres of land containing 4.6billion barrels of oil and gas in the United States.It is snapping up miner BHP Billiton's shale operations in Texas and Louisiana in its biggest deal in 20 years, with bosses and analysts saying it would transform the business.The wells in the oil-rich Permian, Eagle Ford and Haynesville basins produce around 190,000 barrels of oil a day.

The BP link by theaviator in post 2351 above is indeed hardly a coincidence.

They know the Permian well, decided so did we, and gave us a great bit of backing with a $25m hedging facility and, presumably, first mover advantage with Matt should they come looking further into onshore US assets. And they've begun that expansion with today's announcement.

Even if Matt wants to fly solo for a while longer those kinds of friends and neighbours are a big advantage. The mutual advantage, like an Ibex on the back of a Wildebeest, is plain to see...

Maybe iloveit could see his 10-20p materialise before the decade/year/month is out after all. Now, now, you've all got me at it! 5p first again will do.
