02/1/2003 13:45 | I've decided to get broadband since I'm currently running 2 PC's, 1 fax machine, a private phone line and a business phone line on one POTS connection after moving house in 2002! I hung on to the giointernet sales line for 10 minutes then gave up. If the sales line is that busy/understaffed what will the tech support line be like?! I have one or two more questions if anyone would like to help? Does my existing modem connection (ESS-PCI) plug into a broadband modem? If this is the case I wouldn't be able to access my narrowband ISP's for e-mail etc., would I? Would I be better off using the USB connectors? Would I need a separate firewall for the USB socket and the PCI modem or does the software check all ports? | mi££ions
02/1/2003 00:56 | Wondering whether to get Broadband..... Has to be cheapish. Anybody got it, successfully, for under £30 /month, and which company ? | bj444
01/1/2003 22:17 | Miavoce, cheers, now I'm getting there :o)) | bj444
01/1/2003 19:23 | bj444, the filter acts as a Y connector, with the tail of the Y being plugged into the phone socket and the two arms being connected to the Phone and ADSL modem. The filter does the separation befor passing the data or voice to the approriate device. Data goes to the ADSL modem which is connected to the PC, and voice goes to the Phone. | miavoce
01/1/2003 18:54 | I am a physicist, with an incomplete knowledge of comms technology. Am I right, assuming that Broadband means a torrent of packets of digital data, both for phone and for PC, coming down a normal phone line, from an modernised exchange... then the special modem analyses every packet, and processes it and sends to PC, or to phone.. so that both can operate simultaneously ? | bj444
01/1/2003 18:12 | Pipex is great. Connection speed 576k. Cost 23.99 p/month. | miavoce

01/1/2003 17:46 | I'm with Force9 - no problems so far - now i'm using broadband i don't think i could go back to dial-up. Connect speed is cabut 250k - 5 times faster than dial up. Apparently i need to do some tweaks to get it upto 350-400k. | rifraf1
01/1/2003 17:38 | I find this site superb | tim 3

01/1/2003 14:01 | bj444 I recently signed up with Tiscali - Cost me just £65 for the modem and 2 microfilters and £27 per month - no connection fees. It goes like a dream! All I can say is that if you've been driving a Mini and you get in a Ferrari, you KNOW the difference ! | logica2me
01/1/2003 13:56 | Try £17.99 per month and given excellent reviews in press (Daily Express) | doubleorquits

18/11/2002 12:10 | I am about to order broadband and have a telephone extension in my (upstairs)office. I have a PC, a laptop (with docking station), a fax and a telephone connected to this extension. I also have a telephone connected downstairs. How many microfilters will I need? Can I put one on the extension then hang all the above off that or does every device have to have its own filter? Put another way, can the filter be upstream of the ADSL connection (I would doubt this!) or is the filter only required when plugging other devices into the same wall socket (i.e. only one filter (for upstairs), I would doubt this too.)? Main BT socket(1)-----teleph Main BT socket(2)-----extens Any help greatly appreciated. | mi££ions
18/11/2002 11:59 | mi££ions: I actually believe filters serve both ends, they ensure voice signals are clear from DSL signal interference and the router/modem is free from voice signal interference, but essentially you are correct yes. Bottom line, every phone socket in your abode needs one. Once you've done this you can of course attach your modem/router to any phone socket in the house. cheers Vanilla | vanilla
18/11/2002 08:15 | Biomax,Vanilla, Thanks for your replies. As I understand it the reason for the filters is to remove noise from telephone conversations not to clean up the ADSL signal? | mi££ions
18/11/2002 08:06 | wageslave: Cost of Zen ADSL HOme = £25.52 per month Mi££ions: You need to put a microfilter on every phone socket in the house to ensure the signal from the actual one you plug into remains clean. I got my filters from a shop in Tottenham Court road (dont know whether you are in London or not) for £7 each as I bundled them with a router purchase. BTW, it may be overkill for you but I use the Draytek Vigor2600 adsl router. Its a combined router and modem, has four ports so you can hang multiple units off it, and comes with built-in firewall security, which is something you MUST deal with once you go broadband. They do a wireless version as well which may be of interest. You can see details of it here: > Vanilla | vanilla
18/11/2002 07:29 | Although i hate to say it - no problems (as yet) with BT. | kizer
18/11/2002 07:13 | million, ask technicall support but in similar situation i have two filters, one upstairs for PC and phone and one downstairs for fax/phone | biomax
17/11/2002 22:55 | I use Zen Internet , having the ZenADSL Home package (512KB download, 256KB upload, 50:1 ratio, ability to allocate multiple static ip addresses, back-up dial-up account, POP3). Customer service is good (emails promptly responded to with coherent answers and access to 9-5 phone support), line speed is a revelation, 256KB upload is useful and so far after 3 months continuous use I have had no downtime, so have not used the dial-up backup as yet. cheers Vanilla | vanilla
