Don't tell Sid!

(that will only mean anything to those of us old enough to remember the British Gas floatation :)

PS just checked and my memory from what is now 35 years ago is not quite right on that, it was actually "Tell Sid"!

Ultimately, raising rates in a weak or vulnerable market is a bad idea - but these years of foolishness in not tackling the elephant in the room means that the bad idea is going to have to happen anyway, sooner or later.
After not raising in November, I too was surprised to see the raise yesterday. Should have gone bigger than 0.25% though if going to bother at all.
I guess if one believes the narrative of a recovering economy and jobs market, then further rate rises in 2022 will be fairly easily absorbed. IMO, this feels like stagflation, but I really hope I am wrong. GLA.

Bounty,

I agree it was the surprise rather than the amount. It gave the impression the Gov is panicking.

He dug his head in the sand rather than acting in November

Lws, it was the unexpected timing of the rate rise yesterday which surprised the markets not the scale of it.

Seeing as this stock doesn't move that much it was a huge drop but mostly recovered the position now, good buying op for the brave

BH: That is probably because the rate rise was tiny! I agree the debt pile is high here, and that is literally my only concern with NG as a holding.
I think the market currently believes that the BoE will not raise rates that much more over the next 12 months. Even though what many nations probably need is a number of Paul Volckers to pull the plaster off.
That would hurt a lot of outfits, including NG of course, but I fear sustained, rising inflation more.
I did not live through the 1970's and too young to be aware of this stuff in the early 1980's either...but they did not even have the type of debt pile that we do today, so goodness knows how bad it will be when eventually the music stops!

Not much of a drop at the end of the day given the surprise nature of the BoE news at midday.

Mattboxy,

As I said in previous post, Bailey is weak, he takes his stage from what happens in the US. This rise should have been done in Nov.

To arrest inflation we need to raise interest rates by 4%.

They have got a hell of a lot of debt. May be more of a thought that further rises will follow next year. Many hoped they would hold off with omicron hitting everything just before Xmas but they didn't

Share price absolutely tanking, did not like that rate decision one bit. Buying opportunity now but how far will it fall? Only a small rise and expected albeit it slightly early, drop feels like an overreaction to me, minus 35ish points in 15 mins.

Mass inflation to pay for furlough, grants given to businesses and commercial premises to stay open.

This money printing will have to be paid for by someone and it is usually sorted by inflation eradicating debt, ie, the £303billion can be paid back in years to come by borrowing when £303Billion will be seen as small change.

One thing for sure, we will always need energy (heating, lighting etc) and as nothing in life is free these shares should keep pace.

If NG’s gamble to electrify transport, use clean energy etc etc and that decision pays off, the share price could be at levels never seen before.

I can see these shares in years to come being £20/ share, that would make the Company’s market cap £68billion.

Put things into perspective, Tesla only one maker of electric cars ( there are many other makers), has a market cap of £962billion
