I'm no expert but as discussed before laser effectors are probably a way off operational readiness and also we understand that the Paladin or other MSI mounts are effector agnostic so a laser effector could be mounted in lieu of a conventional cannon. Certainly not something I'm concerned with re: MSI's prospects but happy to hear other people's views.

Even this isn't immune from the small cap malaise. Buying opp?

What I haven't seen anywhere is the range of the 50kw laser, and also how many bursts per minute it can emit. It will, like in star trek, only be able to store so much charge and will have to be recharged after firing X times. Interesting that the big problem is the weather. The 4 units being sent overseas won't be doing any live fire testing but appear to be solely for weather/dust trials to see how it operates. They are also not so good at rockets, artillery and mortars according to the reports. On that basis, it would seem that whilst really really useful (assuming it can fire enough multiple bursts), it can only be part of a layered defence. Which is where the 30mm (or equivalent) SHORAD comes in. I could see the layered defence consist of 5 inch guns for 15km range, 30mm for 2-3km range and lasers for shorter than that. Class 1 drones are less than 150kg,.class 2 is 150-600kg and class 3 are more than 600kg. ..

"The Department of Defense has deployed four laser systems designed to intercept drones and rockets in the Middle East. The Pentagon has been developing a laser-style interceptor to reduce the cost of shooting down UAVs and rockets.

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James Mingus announced the new deployment of Directed Energy Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) prototypes to the Middle East. The Army developed the weapons system in coordination with RTX, formerly Raytheon. The former employer of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, RTX, has received over $100 million to develop the platform.

DE M-SHORAD, according to RTX, is a 50-kilowatt vehicle-mounted laser designed to intercept drones, missiles, and rockets at short range.

RTX and the Pentagon believe laser systems will be a cheaper alternative for downing cheap drones and rockets. The four interceptors deployed to the Middle East are mounted on Stryker armored vehicles."

If this is effective will it null the drone sale upside for msi?

Yes I did a bit of research but couldn't find any MSI reference plus APS now have a containerised version of their SkyCTRL and/or fieldCTRL offering which can be easily confused with the paladin when reading narrative.

Obviously I hope you are correct but APS normally reference MSI if involved and I think they designate the product as SkyCtrl SKID.

I do though believe they are now delivering land based systems to 2 middle eastern customers.

YASRUB,

No mention of MSI effectors within the APS announcement for the delivery of SkyCtrl & FieldCtrl for Rawnda so could be an APS soft kill system.

MSI-DS at the Counter UAS Technology Europe Conference in London

MSI-DS will be at the Counter UAS Technology Europe Conference, taking place in London on 16-17 April 2024.

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE C-UAS CAPABILITIES TO PROTECT EUROPEAN SKIES FROM HOSTILE UNMANNED AIR SYSTEMS

With the growing proliferation of small drones and UAS technology, European armed forces and security agencies seeking to protect critical national infrastructure at home and also forward deployed personnel operating abroad.

As a Sponsor and Exhibitor, visit us to explore our the MSI-DS TERRAHAWK PALADIN, our mobile, deployable short range air defence system to detect and defeat hostile unmanned threats ranging from large tactical UAVs to fast incoming aerial, ground, as well as maritime surface targets such as drone boats and FIAC.

MSI-DS TERRAHAWK PALADIN draws industry attention for its mobility (vehicle integrated and/or trailer-based to transport and re-deploy when and where priorities change), rapid deployability (NATO-standard D.R.O.P.S based system), flexibility (wide range of roles from protecting high value targets to wider coastal and border protection), and modularity (wide range of direct fire effectors up to 40mm, integration of C-UAS Missile and Rocket systems, ammunition, radar, and tracking options).

Mesh-Network and C3/C4 systems – organic integration at the battery and company level to create a cost-effective system with shared sensor assets and geographically dispersed radar units communicating with themselves or with a central command post.Whether deployed as a singleton or as part of a layered defence network, the MSI-DS TERRAHAWK PALADIN secures significant tactical and strategic advantages over fixed location air defence systems.

Counter UAS Technology Europe 2024 will be the confluence of industry and speakers, featuring the leading European C-UAS Programme Managers, wider international defence organisations and the top industry providers.

GCC client. We are aware that MSI already have a presence in the region with their land based offerings but this could be a new customer.

Part of the contract award noted in the June prelims or a separate order…? Production and delivery ongoing since December 2023 will feed nicely into the Prelims.

Well done MSI.

Good article in today's FT on defence companies, mainly large ones covering all of Europe plus some smaller ones. No mention anywhere of MS, but will attract attention to the sector I hope.

But if their kit will mount the MSI terrahawk (and it is the only RWS product they mention ) it is a nice mention. Shows further MSI traction.

Regarding swarm drone attacks, I think we may yet see the return of the 4.5 inch gun on future ships. Range of 15-20 km , 25 rounds a minute (mark 8) and great for proximity. Cheap compared to missiles and with 30mm guns for the sub 1.5km defence it provides great area defence. I think we will go back to the end of WW2, in that multiple 4.5 inch guns and multiple 30mm guns will be installed on every ship. Houthi actions in the red sea have shown that no current navy can prevent mass drone attacks.Btw, as far as I am aware the 4.5inch guns on RN ships are useless for anti drone/aircraft as they didn't buy the air warfare package when they were installed. It was anticipated that missiles would do the job (sea slug onwards). They can only be reliably used for land or sea action.

Thanks and yes it does seem to me also that a 'layered' approach is most likely so plenty of space for MSI offering even if it is not typically the first line of defence.
