From today's Sunday Times, the Government has just green-lit a project for 13 new frigates to come into service for 2020: "Navy's eco-warrior frigates to be greenest ships ever Thirteen environmentally-frie Tim Ripley Published: 18 September 2011 "An eco-friendly warship that moves almost silently and is fitted with underwater drones is to become the new mainstay of the Royal Navy. The global combat vessel, 13 of which are due to come into service from 2020, will be the "greenest" warship to have seen service in the navy. To cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions it will use selective catalytic reactors - similar to catalytic converters on cars - low-consumption LED electric lighting and drag-reducing non-stick paint on the hulls. However, the ship's massive firepower could hardly be seen as environmentally friendly. It will bristle with weaponry, including a 4½in cannon, and in front of the bridge will be vertical-launch missile tubes capable of firing air-defence or land-attack missiles. It will also have dual drive. "The ship will run on diesel drive when it needs silent running to hunt submarines," said Brian Johnson, a member of the team from BAE Systems that worked on the design. He added: "But when it needs speed the gas turbine will be engaged." Naval architects began drawing up plans for the Type 26 frigate after Liam Fox, the defence secretary, gave the green light to the project earlier this year. Billed as the first true "post-cold war" warship to be designed for the navy, it is intended to be as effective against pirates in speedboats as it is in naval battles and is a replacement for the Type 23 frigates, the first of which was commissioned in 1989." I'd suggest that anyone wanting to buy might wish to snap these up - the most you can usually get in one swoop is usually just 500-1,250 shares or even less. | rivaldo | |

Now would certainly also be a good time for more buybacks if my expectations of 35p-40p EPS this year are realised.
