11/2/2006 17:59 | Useful article in IC on friday, arguing that commodities are into a 'supercycle' ie 20-30 years of growth rather than the usual 2-3 years of a typical economic cycle.....The reason of course is China and Indias insatiable demand for raw materials which they cannot easily magic into existence. It points out that retailers have a p/e ratio of mid teens and apparently little prospect of increasing the eps (overvalued), any tech or engineering firm is at the mercy of cheap imports from asia. Miners at typical p/e of 8-11 have enormous potential to keep growing eps because of these two countries consumption and growing economies. The article suggested that one of the best ways to play China and India is to buy shares in 'what they need'.... commodities. | bearscarer

17/1/2006 18:52 | A "world incident" in the Middle East would normally be good for both Oil and Gold prices. As to a Israel-Iran nuclear exchange (of which there is a small possibility at some point IMHO), that would be uncharted territory. I suspect the markets would simply close - we'd all have other things to worry about ... I'm not too worried about bird flu at this point. However, China and India have to stumble at some point just for normal cyclical reasons. We should get lots of warning about that though. The more immediate worry with some commodities is that increased supply catches up with demand leading to price reductions. Again we should see this coming though. Right now it's still most definitely a bull market. DYOR etc. | mattybuoy
